I was reading this article not too long ago that talked about modifing the thermostat. What they did was drill a 1/16" hole in the thermostat that would allow coolant to run through it. That way, when the thermostat opens, it wouldn't be quite a cold shock to the head and block. Maybe our thermostats already have something like that though. I guess I will take a look tomorrow at a extra I have laying around. What are your thoughts on this?
 
It already has a weep hole. You get no "shock" from the "cold" water coming into the block: the thermostat doesn't just sproing open, it opens gradually as the coolant is heating.

Divert that energy to wheel cleaning.
 
Yes - there are posts with guys having trouble using Thermostats without the weep hole that show up as OK on the Aftermarket Part application charts - I would guess that if you have such an aftermarket part it might be a good idea to put this weep hole in it.

Many of the same thermostats have other problems like the actual thermostat opening being too small. I don't bother with anything other than an OEM one anymore. I went through two or three different A.M. ones before I wised up.

On this same note make sure the bolts for your Thermo Housing are long enough to get full thread engagement - Someone had used one short bolt on mine & wrung out the shallow threads - antiseize isn't a bad idea here where you can get more corrosion due to all the moisture around steel & aluminum.
