what should i do while the engine is out?

im currently in the process of ripping the engine out when i go home on the weekends (im at college right now). i plan on putting in an ACT 2600 clutch, fixing all my oil leaks, putting on my new valve cover, cleaning the whole engine/engine compartment, changing all the belts, and removing all the extra weight (such as AC). is there anything else i should do while i have the engine out? i dont want to find out there was something i should have done after i put it back in.
 
its not really nessicary but i would suggest you put in solid urathane motor mounts while your engine is out or the car, everyone i know who has installed has been very happy with the results
on an awd its not that important but its a good idea to put them in there, they dont cost that much and its a hell of alot easier to install them with the engine out already
 
yeah definitely get urethane motor mounts..your stock ones are prolly either really worn or ripped anyways...might as well get a new fuel filter, if you plan on putting a manual steering rack in do it now, it only take about 15min to do when the motors out...also get new tie rods ends and sway bar end links if you do.

if your front axles look rough ide just go ahead and replace them to save trouble down the road.

take your intake manifold off and get a few cans of carb cleaner and clean the hell out of the inside of it (and outside if you want) lots of carbon build up gets in there...also block of the egr while you have easy access..i also plugged up the egr hole inside the intake manifold as well with jb weld (yeah ghetto but works fine) and smoothed it all over.

thats all i can think of now
 
whats the benefit of a manual steering rack?
 
you said you want to remove extra weight...so by converting to a manual steering rack you can get rid of the power steering pump, lines, and the power rack itself is a little heavier then the manual...it also frees up some space

i have another question actually...i started removing stuff last weekend (like the radiator and intercooler and other little stuff). my dad said that the metal tube that goes in front of the radiator from the drivers side and then turns and goes back is a cooling line for the power steering. we were going to leave it in there, but the hosed connecting this to the power steering pump were disconnected. does this mean that i probably have a manual steering rack in there? and how could i tell? or could it just have been disconnected? if it has just been disconnected, then could this cause any problems? i can have my dad go look at the car if someone can tell me how to tell if i have a manual steering rack.

a power steering rack has hardlines going into the rack...if you look behind the intake manifold down around the axles area in the upper right hand of the engine bay you should be able to see...but if the pump is still in there i dont know why someone would have put a manual rack in...they didnt even ever come on factory eclipse turbos..you gotta get them from 1.8L ones.

i dont know for sure if the power steering rack is in there, i havent looked yet. but if it is, why is the cooling thing disconnected?
 
water pump, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, tensioner, timing belt alternator and maybe a set of under drive pulleys

under drive pulleys?
 
Under drive pulleys are larger in diameter then stock pulleys at least all mine are crank alt and water pump.
 
heres what you should do:


step 1: get a hampster
step 2: get a hampster wheel
step 3: get cheese on a string
step 4: put hampster contraption inside engine bay
step 5: take picture of hampster running on wheel, then in photoshop add "Powered by VTEC"
step 6: enjoy the wrath of thousands of honda owners

That crank pulley had better be smaller diameter than stock, or you've got an overdrive crankshaft pulley.... which I doubt they make.
 
I would definitely do the whole Timing belt shebang (tensioner, all other belts etc)

Doing the motor mounts is a good idea, as is removing the balance shafts (since it's going to shake anyway w/ the mounts, might as well shake more w/o the shafts, heh)

This won't get you any hp gains, but I'd go through and repaint the engine bay, get rid of unnecessary vaccum hoses/wiring/etc., and then spend a lot of time re-routing the wiring that's left to clean up the engine bay. John Sheppard's engine bay is a great example. His engine bay is a good example on so many levels! :D
