My car has about 80k on it and I had some blow by (black colored smoke) tonight at the track when I shifted. Is this bad or is it normal??? Is it because I am running rich? I have been told its normal to I need to replace my rings...the more reliable source told me it was normal.

i have a video of the DSM Shootout, and the ONE thing i do notice is that 95% of the dsms that go down the track puff black (if not black and blue) smoke at every shift.

Alright good, I was in a horrible mood when someone told me my it was my rings that are bad...I swore it was normal

Smoke 101

Black/brown = gasoline, caused by running rich.
Blue = oil, caused by bad rings, bad valve seals, bad turbo seals.
White = water, caused by a blown head gasket, water in the intake, water in the exhaust, a really cold day.

Black = not a big deal, mostly.
Blue = always a problem.
White = a possible big problem or nothing at all.

Cool, huh?

Black inbetween shift is just from running slighty rich as you let off the throttle to shift and ignition is cut.

I was out adjusting my fpr tonight .
On launching off at lights.
The difference in black smoke behind me to non was diabolical.
thats just a few turns difference i gotto get a gauge on that sucker.

The best is when you take off fast and leave little black spots on the front of the car behind you. If you have someone tailgating you hammer the throttle and it sprays black unburnt fuel all over the place...

no doubt i just did that the other day i was sitting in the drivway and i was doing somethin can't remeber anyway gave her some gas a few times, and didn't think twice. couple hrs later i went out and moved my car and pulled the other in the garage, i was like what the hell did the car hit, it looked like it hit a can of black spray paint head on, then i remebered and was like o yeah opps:D

I got a question about my brothers sr20det... We put my joep pn there while my car is down, and the bleed off coming out of the mbc is shooting black gunk in the engine bay. I know we can mount it so it bleeds of to the bround or what have you. But is this completly normal being moist ? Its not just black smoke its, its not oily, its just gunk black stuff and its coming directly from the turbo?

Thats what I was scared of, but it doesnt have any smell or even taste (dont ask) of oil. Maybe its just condensation built up from the motor sitting around in muggy japan with nothing covering the compressor???
