2gTurboS

just wondering if anyone has done this, and if it has performance gains or losses over traditional 3" back...I have a 2.5-3" downpipe right now with an exhaust that was done before I got the car and is pressbent 2.5" pipe to a universal arospeed muffler and plus the exhaust starts after the 2nd o2 sensor so there is a section where the pipe goes to factory size..any how I was wondering if I just go to an exhaust shop have them cut my downpipe right before the flange and weld a high performance universal muffler to it and just run a short pice of 3" pipe to the side of my car to exit right in front of the rear tire??? and just zip tie my o2 sensor up under the car somewhere I think its bad anyway, and when I get an afc I can just retune my car to function properly w/out it correct?? if not I guess just apexiu or what exhaust will do..later corey

now why would you wanna do that? you've got a 4 banger import, not a hot rod. reminds me when i was at the exhaust shop...kid came in wanting "dual exhaust" for his 100% stock honda accord. the guys just laughed at him and were like, "dual exhaust? you got a damn HONDA" the kid just gave a blank stare...god that was hilarious.

I was not implying I was 100% going to do that to my car I am just bored and thought if any one had had a gain from it why not but hell why not be different any way..later

-Your GST have plenty of room for the side exit, on my 3" turbo back, I made the DP bolt up to the N1 cat back(still have but don't use), then weld a big "L" shape pipe exit 10" in front of the rear passenger tire, using 18" + 12" in length resonators make heart pounding but not loud sound, did try the Dynomax muffler but only get 3" ground clearence, fake 1" pipe muffler in the back.

-Because 2gTurboS has a turbo 4G63, unlike a N/A A420, a turbo motor benefit with bigger exhaust.

Actually I've never seen that sight but damn thats a bad ass car..also Does anyone run open down pipe on the street just wondering what it sonds like I've never tried..

I hate hondas as much as the next guy but the newer V6 honda accords came with dual "exhaust" from the factory. basically a single pipe off the exhaust mani that does a Y split somewhere along the line into two mufflers and two tail pipes. maybe the kid wanted a performance upgrade for his stock exhaust. the way that shop reacted to this customer is typical of the redneck speed and exhaust shops that are in my general vicinity  however, IMO the only dual exhaust that should be allowed on a honda anyways is on the S2K...

It's really dam loud!!! I ran like that for a day cause I was having problems with my test pipe, and there was a road racing event so I didn't have time to fix it. You can hear the tubo spinning, it's kickass sounding. On the down side there is the posiblity you could get boost creep or spinn the turbo apart (I did that to my 14b on a later day, non-related)

I run a straight pipe (from the 02 housing- 3") with a dynomax race magnum muffler. SOUNDS BAD A SSS!! Really really loud though. I have to stick the car in 3rd and go about 10 mph down my street so I don't wake up my neigbors. I like it :D :D

How much was that 3" with the dynomax muffler as compared to a normal exhaust..if its cheaper I'll wanna do that because it probably flows just as good..

bigger exhaust part is not what i'm talking about...it's havin side pipes...... that's kinda on the domestic hot rod side, personally, i think you'd get ALOT of slack from domestic owners.....

i know about the v6 accords...a couple of my friends have them, and they're pretty quick for a stock accord. but this kid didn't have one of those, wasn't even vtech. it was like a '96 4 door. "performance uprgrade", no. actually the loss in back pressure would make him slower. sure he'll look "good" (in his opinion) but he'll be slow as $hit doin it.

another kid came in wantin "side pipes" for his like '79 pos station wagon, which was a good laugh also. shop owner said since fast & furious came out, business has gone up like 300%. LOL:laugh:

depending on the shop you go to, you can prolly pick a universal muffler up for about $100, have some 3" piping custom bent and ran for another $100, then just get a high flow cat or test pipe (although the shop won't do the test pipe) in place of your stock catalytic converter. you should be able to get a test pipe for about $30...high flow cat si gonna be around $100.

does runnin off the downpipe loss power or gain, rather than having an exhaust system? has anyone tried?

I know it not a dsm and it wasn't turbo charge. But I had a heavy moded 96 SL2 Saturn and I ran with nothin but header for a period of time. And it was loud as hell. People said it soundedl like a v8. But I felt a gain from mid to high range and loss a little bit at the bottom end. So I would say I gained hp and loss torque. I would imagine it would be the same on a eclipse.

wouldn't running a side exit exhaust eliminate bends in the cat back portion? i would believe that would help a little in the performance department. specifically the 1g fwd-t's, the exhausts on those seem to have some wicked bends in them.

that's why i would do it. ;)

hell, it works GREAT for sleepers, if you run a side exit, paint it black. Leave the stock rear section in place. This way, cops will not see a big old exhaust tip, but they will hear it being loud and assume that you just have a bad muffler (unless you have a whole bunch of body work and stuff). Thats what I am going to do on my mirage turbo.

you can barely see that exhaust tip unless your looking for it

It will work better than a standard 3" turbo back.

You are VERY HARD PRESSED to find a 2g FWD, full 3" catback, they either neck down, or have a million bends making them work. Side exit is viable alternative. Only thing, is the rear of the car looks kinda whack with the the empty muffler location.

My shop here in NY "Holeshot Performance",has done this.....it's actually on my menu for the future. They did a car with this set-up already, but i'm not too sure about performance gains/losses.They did run this car at a track earlier this year,i'm not too sure what he ran,or the rest of the mods.....but I should be paying them a visit this week so any of the info you need i'll ask.

I did a search and found very little on a side exhaust setup. I was hoping by now that a few more people have gave it a try. I am thinking about building a custom one for my talon but want to know if the performance is the same, better, or worse than a normal 3" turbo back exhaust. I would be running a 2.5" dp (maybe 3") and 3" pipe going to use manderl bends and thinking about skipping the muffler and cat. So more or less it would be a straight pipe going off my dp to about 6" or so in front of my rear passenger tire. If it helps I am running a 14b on my 2g tsi not much more than that. got your basic freebies and a uicp k&n. Thanks for the space

Performance would be about the same as a good 3" system. You wouldn't be able to "feel" any difference. However, you would be able to HEAR a difference! No muffler or cat? That will be very loud. Is this a track only car?

Making one for the street might be cool if you could get a muffler on it and still get good flow. Unfortunately the floorpans are very deep and the only place to put a muffler is in the very narrow tunnel down the middle or behind the rear axle.

Good luck on fabbing yours and shoot us some pics if you do it.
