What does a resonator do? Does it sound like a good idea to replace the catalytic converter with a resonator to gain more horsepower? Will this do any harm to my engine?

You won't really see any gain on an NT car... This is normally geared towards a turbo car..

You can look at a resonator like another muffler..their purpose is to baffle noise and baffle horsepower. :D

Most cars, turbo or not, will gain HP by removing a resonator at the possible cost of losing some torque.

A resonator is basically a glasspack looking muffler. Sure some are restrictive (they neck down inside). I personally use a 3" dynomax race magnum bullet muffler in place of my cat to help take the edge off the sound that my thermal makes. I noticed no loss in performance at all.. but then again... the bullet doesn't neck down inside at all.

The guy that posted this thread has a 420a powered car... & wanted to know if replacing the cat w/ a resonator would make any difference... which I think it would not.. other than causing him to fail a visual inspection.

True, but the guy that posted this thread lives in Florida, which does not have emissions testing in most, if not all, counties.

It might make a small difference in HP if it doesn't neck down-- that stock cat is pretty restrictive. I had a similar question on DSMTalk a while back-- if you do a search on "resonated test pipe" I'm sure it'll come up, if you're interested.

you can find a lot of info in the non turbo section about exhaust setups for the NA cars. Its a good idea to lose the restriction. If you're gonna replace the cat just get a test pipe cat back system. Or even straight pipes all the way back to the muff. That might sound good on a N/T.
just some ideas

So how much louder was the mufler in place of the cat? Or if you went from a straight pipe, how much power loss? I wanna try this.

I put on a testpipe in replace of the catyltic converter. It helped in HP but i have alot of mods done too. It made my exhaust sound raspier and it pops sometimes. But I have a silencer and it sounds fine with the silencer on..

The thing is, my exhaust is too LOUD. I got Buschur 2.5in downpipe, 3in hiflow cat, and Bushur 3in exhaust. Now I wanna toss the cat, but my car is already very loud. Should i get a resonator/muffler in place of the cat or will this defeat the purpose of getting more power.
