What is with the modified mas that takes the place of a vpc like a al blaha. I have seen these but no one seems to have them or talk about them, do they work? How well do they work? Are they worth the money?

I have ran an actual Blaha MAS. It doesn't take the place of a VPC. A VPC uses a pressure and temp sensor to come up with a fake Karman signal. It effectively turns your air metering system to a speed density system while retaining a stock ECU.

A Blaha MAS is just a cut up MAF sensor with some resistance added to the thermistor line. It staves off both MAS overrun and fuel cut until a much higher total airflow level. The resistor on the temp line compensates for this by making your ECU think it's colder out than it actually is, thus adding more fuel to compensate for the reduction in metered airflow. It also is going to remove some restriction from the preturbo intake which effectively makes your turbo more efficient by keeping the incoming air closer to ambient pressures.

Both the VPC and Blaha MAS are good. Both have been on cars that have been in the 10s. The limiting factor of the VPC is that it still requires a GCC or AFC for fine fuel tuning. So does the Blaha MAS but at $120 it comes out way lower in cost after all is said and done.

The Blaha MAS can be ran without an AFC with the flapper door that Al adds. I ran with stock injectors just fine and had planned on using it with 550s (and SAFC), but I changed my mind and ended up going with a 2G MAS and 850cc/min injectors. The 2G MAS is a very similar mod to the Blaha MAS but I think it's better just because the overrun limit on a 2G MAS is goddamn much higher.

Tons of people have ran the hacked 1G MAS, there is a ton of info out there.

I just replaced my 1G MAF with a 2G MAF and Dejon Intake. This made a big difference in the smoothness of the throttle transition. Also by replacing the restrictive snorkel my turbo definately boosts faster then before. For the price that you can get a used 2G MAF for, it cant be beat.
