i'm having a custom exhaust built for my laser and was wondering how long the cat is, my plan is to put in a test pipe for now and get a cat if i ever feel the need to be legal. i want them to put flanges on the test pipe so i can easily do the swap. oh and its not that i'm too lazy to crawl under my car and look, its that the previous owner decided to try and put a test pipe on and completely messed everything up so i don't know where exactly it starts and ends.

thanks
chad

Well, if you are going to have the car up in the air to construct the system, why don't you make the cat to fit the system that you are getting built and then make the test pipe accordingly. I was goofing around with the same thing on my car and I remember something about 17.5 inches, but you're better off having everything fit while installing everything.

Also, if you are going to have to put a cat in there, why not spend the money and get a high-flow and get the ends fitted with flanges and make the test pipe off of that length? I tried fitting a stock cat to my 2.5" system and it was more of a pain than it was worth.

Length in comparison to the stock system isn't really that big of a deal, but you do have to get close so you fit the indentation in the floorboard, just get the car up in the air and start measuring everything and calculating it out. Exhuast systems are for the most part not an exact science, measurements can be close, but they almost never fit perfectly.

sorry i didn't clarify in my first post, but i don't have the stock cat, so i'm going all 3 inch exhuast and want to leave myself the option to put a 3 inch high flow cat in.

thanks chad

Ok, then just find a 3" cat online (Ebay) or wherever and take the measurements, then add another 3-4" to each side so you can weld on an extension with the flange to both sides and make your test pipe accordingly. Since, you are probably going universal for a cat, as long as you are longer than the cat, you should be in good shape.

I was looking on ebay and they have Carsound cats for 49.99 with an overall length of 16". Carsound is an off-shoot of Magnaflow and everyone I know that has one likes it and hasn't had any problems with them falling apart. That's saying alot since I live in PA and they salt our roads like mad.
