dont over tighten the Valve cover. 2-3 Foot pounds. That is all! Change all the gaskets may cost you ~40$ but will be worth it in the long run.

I'd start with the one on the Oil Cap - $1 - & it's probably puddled on the Intake under your Injectors too...

Try the rubber oil cap gasket. $2 or less at PepBoys or similar auto parts place.
Edit: : oil in one sparkplug hole!
Which one is it then?

Oil cap gasket, not the entire oil cap.

It's also a good idea to bend the tabs on the cap toward the cap so they put more force on the gasket where it seals to the valve cover.

I had a problem like this. It was because my PCV valve was bad. I would change that also with the valve cover gasket.....

sounds like a crack
just changed the valve cover on my 91 tsi due to the same prob,, get in there with a clean wrag, clean all that oil out and around,, then start the car up and look to see where the oils coming from. watch for "sqwirts or little bubbles" not realy bubble but sometimes the small sqwirting beeds of oil can look like bubbles bubbling up.
if you find nothing, remove the valve comver in start inspecting it further, and also the seals.
as far as making your car run bad, make sure your oil level is where it should be ,, a properly seated sparkplug is not going to allow oil into the combustion chamber, possible a spark plug wire end full of oil cauzing a not so good connect?. clean everything and inspect!. either way probaly not a big deal. may need a new cover like me at the worst.

I have the exact same problem. I'll be fixing it tomorrow. It was easy to tell on mine just by looking at which spark plug wire had all the crap built up on it. Also, if you pull out all your plug wires and run your finger around where each gasket is, you should be able to tell which ones are bad. Good Luck!

To me, sounds like 2 leaks.. the oil cap and the spark plug well gaskets.
Change them all, can't hurt but about 30 bux from your wallet.

Oil spewing all over valve cover
I just noticed it but It looks like my valve cover gasket might be split or cracked. Im curious if anyone else has had this problem or if it might be coming from somewhere else. The turbo and everything is dry. Its on the front by the timing belt cover. Let me know what you guys think.

check your oil dip stick they tend to pop up and spray oil. Also a leaky valve cover is common with dms. The little half moon thing likes to leak alot.

There was a thread that just discussed the same exact spot that the leak was coming from. Turned out that it was "the oil cap".

Any way you look at it, its a cheap fix.
1) replace oil cap gasket. main problem usually.
2)oil still there? spend the money and pull the valve cover off and replace the gasket there and the spark plug gaskets. Its acutally the spark plug gaskets that are the problem, but you need to replace the valve gasket anyways.
3) be sure to kill the problem and do all 3 things (dont forget the half moon plug a the same time) and you will be happy, no more leak. if there IS a leak, then you will be mad. time for new valve cover. Basically, CHECK THE HELL out of it when off. carb cleaner will clean off the brown, and check like a mad man. dont want to pull the valve cover off again after replacing all that.
