you dont have to retighten the head if your valve cover is leaking...I would check all the bolts and make sure they are all around 2 ft. lbs. which is where they are supposed to be...very very little torque or YOU WILL BREAK THE VALVE COVER, I HAVE DONE IT BEFORE...actually my dad did it...haha he had to buy me a nice new one.

that cement stuff might be OK...but I think the new gasket is less than 20 bucks...just buy it and put a new one in...really easy and will better in the long run.

Oil around Valve Cover bolt?

Well, I noticed a small amount of oil around one of my bolts. Not much at all but its the second time it's happened. Do I just need to replace the valve cover gasket. If so, are Fel-Pro gaskets any good?

I don't think rob quite understood what you were saying....... Yes, i'd say your problem would be solved by a new valve cover gasket. Thats a strange problem, but a new gasket should solve it. If not then go ahead and try, a uhh.... new oil cap.... that sounds like.... a good idea

Peace

You may also have a crack due to over tightening of a bolt. Sealant or TIG weld can fix that if thats the case.

Oil on valve cover?

Dont know whats up with this problem, there is oil sitting on top of my valve cover, to the right of where my oil cap is, i checked my PCV valve and its not stuck closed unless i could be missing something about that, that im not noticing, all i did was blow through it and it was fine, im running 14 pounds of boost with stock BOV, Stock IC Piping (Not for long cause i won the dave brode UICP for best tech article ) its just stumping me, kinda sucks to open up the hood and show someone and have oil sitting on top of my engine. any ideas? thanks...

the usual culprits:
1. missing or old oil cap gasket
2. hairline stress cracks on valve cover

I had the exact same problem in my car. I changed all the gaskets around the valve cover and the problem was gone. There's a how-to article on the front page of the DSMtalk board

The solution for me was a new oil cap gasket.

Question Oil in valve cover

When I took off the plastic on top of the valve cover, i noticed that there was oil in the front and corners. i cleaned it and drove it around for the day, and it appears again. theres also oil on the two main bolts on the front of the valve cover. what could be the problem?

You either need to replace the gasket in the spark plug area or you have hair line cracks on the valve cover. Jb weld(correct name?) worked for me on the hair line crack.

90% likely you have cracks where the two lower bolts on the valve cover are (under that cover). Epoxy or JB weld will fix it.

Yes, either cracks or also a leaking 710 cap. You may want to check the seal on it. After time it will become hard and not seal and under WOT leaks oil.

It can leak from the cap down into where the spark plugs are

Autozone has oil caps that fit DSM's for like $5

On the subject of JB weld, The direction says to remove all dirt and paint. My cover is powdercoated, I cracked a little by overtightening the pcv. Can I just put the mix on top of the coating? Thanks.

If the oil cap isn't too bad, you can spray some Tire Wet on the seal and it will freshen it up a bit until you get a new one. However, they're only 10 bucks max at your local parts store
