I have a 91 TSI....my buddy and I were just looking at the engine and I looked at his jaw and it dropped. The reason being was that he said I was missing my oil/coolant line that runs from the head behind the turbo and goes to the oil cooler?? I went and asked a buddy if he happened to have a spair? He did. I was just wondering what are the adverse effects of this not being on...and what you guys think that I should do. Thank you very much.

If you were missing the line form the cooler then you should have oil everywhere, after all it's got to go somewhere.

TSI,

That is very strange, all 91+ cars had water cooled oil coolers. First, check to see if PO has changed it to air cooled system (as it was on '90 cars), this is a popular upgrade.

Then, I would check to see if you somehow ended up with NT short block (I have seen that happen...). So if you confirm that you do not have air oil cooler check to see if you have provisions for oil cooler line. One will be a nipple in the large coolant line, just above the dipstick. The other one will be a nipple in the thermostat housing.

But hopefully you have the external cooler...

I just got mine, where do I look to find the oil cooler?? I just would like to clean it up, seeing as the rest of the car was so dirty/crappy. I assume that it needs to be able to flow air like a tranny cooler??

You guys are great!!! I just posted that....LOL. Anyway, I have a red valve cover wich signifies to me that it is a VR4 block. I do not have oil everywhere!! Thank god. The previous owner warped the head and the replaced the head...belt..etc. I have had some issues with it getting on the warm side. I am trying to figure out if the line not being their is causing this problem. I am positive that I have an oil cooler!! just not the 90 cooler(my bud has a 90 and I have seen it), however I do have the mount on the bottom drivers side for this conversion. When I look on the passenger side below the water neck there is a nut with a clamp restricting flow, I am imagining that is where the oil comes from. Now when you look on the drivers side to the left of the cooler there is a line that looks to have been cut....nothing comes from this line. What in the H!@#.....please let me know if this sounds right to you and how to alleviate the problem. Thanks alot!!!!

Sounds like someone swapped in a JDM GVR4 tranny and neglected to install an air-cooled oil cooler. Instead they just capped off the sources for the external and let it run. This essential means you have no oil cooling whatsoever.

solution:

B&M air|oil cooler
