I am trying to tap a hole for my EGT guage. But I just stripped all the threads off the thread tapper. The hole is the right size. Did I get the wrong type of bit or did I do something else wrong? I now have a big hole in my exhaust manny and have to wait for the wife to get home so I can get anothe thread tap:mad:

did you thread it SLOWLY with a crescent wrench or something like it, or did you use power tools?

You use the drill to run the correct size hole. But the trhead tap must be used by hand. make sure to use oil on it, and only cut a couple threads at a time, removing it frequently to clean the shavings.

you also should be using something where you can get a grip on both sides of the tap, not a crescent wrench. that can cause you to tap the threads out unevenly. what im trying to describe is something that looks like this:

______<handle
...||....
...||....
...||....
...^....
..tap

I've used a crescent wrench or box end many times for tapping threads. Just use your other hand to steady it and keep it straight.
