I recently replaced my factory muffler with an R1 racing sports muffler. Is there any way that doing this will cause me a decrease in hp or would this help it out?

I'm not sure about this, but I think that in the long term, if you go and change your exhaust system, you will probably have to replace your head gasket. Something with the wrong ratio of air to fuel, it'll mess up that up and create a leak. My spark plug in my #1 is coated with oil, and that's probably the reason why. I'mdefinately not going to back to stock though. After having a nice rumbling, basy tune from my baby, I could never go back to that little pea-shooter of a muffler. "ONce you go bass, you'll never replace."

I know your heart is in the right place by giving some thoughtful advice to a fellow DSMer, but there is NO WAY that changing your muffler is going to cause your head gasket to leak. None at all. People run many more mods than that on these engines and many more engines. Head gaskets can blow if you run too much boost, or have way too lean a mixture, but by doing an exhaust system you cannot go this far. You need to run over 18psi on a stock fuel system/turbo on a regular basis for this to happen.

No disrespect here, I applaud your desire to help out, but your facts are a little off here.

As for the spark plug with oil on it. If you have actual oil on the sparking end(inside the head) then your engine has an oil control problem. The oil control ring in that cylinder is weak, either due to wear, age or heat fatigue. Or some other mechanical damage. You probalby notice a puff or two of oil smoke out the tail pipe as well sometimes.

Of course this could be caused by other issues, such as a turbo with a faulty center bearing allowing oil to be injested in the engine, or even like you said a head gasket that has let go. It will not be caused by a slight reduction in back pressure from a muffler change tho, don't worry about that.

I feel stupid. Ok, well i'm glad you're here to make sure he doesn't get steered in the wrong direction. No offence taken. I look at it like learning something new everyday.
My car doesn't have a turbo on it, so those cant' be the reasons why I got a chocolate covered spark plug. I have not noticed any smoke coming out of my tailpipe either.
Ok, back to Vandawg's post . . .

hehe, I was kinda apprehensive when I saw that you had replied. Sometimes people get real #####y when you explain thier error. Nice to see that you are a human being :)

Your car can still have a bad oil control ring or a head gasket and maybe something else that has slipped my mind(sleepy).

As long as you arent going thru oil like it is cheep beer, and your compression is good, don't worry too much, just keep that plug cleaned up. Running it hard once in a while will keep it clean.
