So I just bought my 1995 TSi AWD... with about 68k miles. I've had it for a month and I've already had to replace the timing belt and clutch and now I'm almost positive I've spun a rod bearing!

The car is making a seriously loud clanking at idle and while I'm driving and the sound follows the RPMs. It started on the freeway after I went into 3rd gear and the engine just stopped responding to the gas I was giving it because I had some issue going past 3k RPMs and it started clanking hardcore. It felt almost as if my clutch was slipping again, but it was shifting fine. Then I was coasting to a stop and my oil light flickered and then right before I stopped it came on and stayed on and when I stopped the car died. I started the car and it fired up just fine and tried to go and it wouldn't move and died again. I tried this 3 times and finally got going on the 3rd try and limped it to my friend's shop 1/2 mile away and checked the oil, which was just fine. No metal shavings on the dipstick or anything.

I had the clutch and flywheel replaced by my mechanic friend with an Exedy OE replacement pressure plate, clutch disk, TOB, and Fidanza flywheel. I've had them on less than 2 weeks and only put about 400 miles on them before this happened. The timing belt job was only 3 weeks old. Right now I'm running stock everything minus a cone filter and a 1G BOV.

Before this happened, I was getting intermitent clanking coming from the car when the clutch was disengaged. Then when I pushed in the clutch, the sound went away.

My friend believes that I spun a rod bearing, which is what I had originally thought as well, but we have not removed the oil pan to check yet. But I've also heard that loose flywheel bolts or improperly installed clutch assemblies can cause similar problems and sounds. Any advice would be appreciated! :thumb:

Sounds like what happened to me when I spun a rod bearing. Drop the oil pan and check there for metal shavings.

Don't screw around, drop the pan and check for shavings. If there's metal, pull the caps one at a time to see where the problem is. I'll bet the thrust bearings trashed.

Did it have oil pressure the last time it ran?

I cracked a crank in half early this year and there was no shaving on the dipstick. Hell, I pulled the drainplug and did see much either. But when I pulled the pan, it looked like Christmas tinsel in there. By the way, it drove home 4 miles with the crank cracked completly in half and ran fine, sounded like the worst case of lift tick you ever heard, but it ran pretty good!

Hold you are getting the noise when you apply the clutch or? OR is it alweys there?

When mine walked it was making noise like i cant even explain. I heard it thru the intake and on the trans side, so definatly drop the oil pan and see if you are walking or is it the rod bearing or something alse.
