I recently re-built my engine and changed to a short shifter. I removed the cables from the transmission when I dropped the engine. I installed my B&M short shifter and when in neutral the short shifter isnt in the middle its almost all the way towards the left (drivers side) any thoughts ideas???? Could I have installed it wrong??

Thanks,
-Brian

Yes it still goes into all of the gears, I'm not sure if I put the cables back in correctly I assume I did. Does anyone have any pics of the cables sitting on top of the transmission?

I also haven't hooked up the clutch slave cylinder yet either.

Mine leans slighty to the left too. It also isn't straight up and down when in neutral either, it leans back a bit (more towards 4th).

And yes I know what I wrote has the potential to sound really bad.

Hahaha i didnt even realize until you called yourself out on it!
The shifter seems like its right inbetween 1st and 2nd gear with a little bit of play on the left and a lot of play on the right if I move it side to side. I'm going to pull the console out tonight and investigate further. The shifter cables appear to be installed correctly.

Since I installed the shifter plus base bushings and linkage bushings, it doesn't have all the slop between gears like it once had. The shifter seems to sit a little more centered. If everything checks out good, I would suggest some new bushings if you haven't do so already.

I did all of that stuff. It makes it "feel" more solid like it says. But, my next move is to just completely replace my shifter cables.

Why? Are they broken?

Well, one thing I have learned about cables is that they tend to stretch over time. We have to replace the same kind of cables on our test cells every couple of years. Now, my car is pretty old and I know that the cables must be warped or stretched somewhat. I considerate it regular maintenance. Its just a precaution I would like to take.

And for the bushings, yes they were very worn out.

I don't think the shift cables are going to be under that much stress, and replacing them if they aren't broken seems like a waste of money to me. But you know what they say about boats and floating...

The bushings at the end of the cables should be upgraded to the "roller skate bearings" though. I love how my shifts felt after that upgrade. I also installed the metal bushings on the shifter base, which tightened it up even further.

Yeah, I used the skater bearings and metal shifter bushings and it improved the feel a good bit.

But, for cables I would prefer to be sure they are in their best condition and not have any questions. I am not saying for everyone to do this. Its just a personal preference.

I just ordered the green glow shifter cable bushing Kit from Mach V a while back, it seem to help a little. And no, they don't really glow. Well I don't think they do.
