MegaSquirt???

Has anyone ever used a megasquirt stand alone on a dsm? Is it any good? My buddy runs a megasquirt on his 5.0 mustang and he got the entire setup for 250 bucks. He said its relaly easy to tune with and really easy to hook up. He wired his whole car in 4 hours. Just wondering because i was planning on going dsmlink and that is 500 plus the 300 for the eprom ecu so lemme know you veiws on the megasquirt setup. I have also heard that it sucks and that it has suddenly dropped lean in many cases on DSM and other imports causing motor failure. But from what i understand if tuned correctly it wont fail. I want a safe realiable and user firendly means of tuning and logging, as well as the ability to sleep at night knowing my car isnt gonna pop.
