Hey

Issue #1: Car Overheats and Fan is not kicking on.

Well I got my car all back together and it has been running fine the last couple of days. Well today my car decided to get hot again. It got to about 223 when I noticed it and immediately shut it off. I waited til it had cooled to 190 and went for it again. No issues the rest of the way home.

When I got home I let it idle and it reached up to about 213 before I shut it down because it was just going up and wasn't about to stop. I took out my thermostat thinking maybe it had gone bad and it would just take longer to get up to temperature but still the temperatures would go up without the thermostat.

I don't know if it happens with everyone without a thermostat but my car cruising around (without letting sit to idle for an extended period of time) would just drop temperatures. After cruising on the freeway for 10 minutes it was 150 degrees and normal driving, it was around 170-180  I remember my buddies car would never do anything like this. It would take a little longer to warm up but the temperature would remain solid.

My fan has stopped working or at least it didn't kick on the one heat cycle i let the car go through (from cold to a little past normal operating temp). I'm going to throw in a stock fan (I have a spal currently) tomorrow and see if that solves the issue of the fan and possibly the temperature issue as well.

I'm leaning towards waterpump or maybe headgasket/warped head. It is just really wierd to me and I am confused as hell.

Issue number 2: Running rough

Now I just noticed my O2 sensor went out when looking at my pocketlogger. Voltage is all over the place. From like .1 to 3.XX. But basically when I let it sit idling the car will start to bog really bad. Similar to running on three cylinders. I went out and messed with the BISS screw to try kicking up the idle enough to cut out the bogging. I screwed that sucker out 3-4 turns before ANY change in the idle, but once it did it would jump from 500-600 rpms to 1300. No middle ground.

After it jumps up I would lower it down to 900-1000 and eventually after about 30 seconds it would do the same thing.

I think it could have something to do with the O2 sensor because it is throwing my fuel trims for a loop, but the car still runs fine other than that.

Tomorrow I am going to a little bit more work considering I noticed these problems right before work and it's now late.

PLEASE any kind of ideas, things to try, etc. would be EXTREMELY appreciated and welcomed. Thanks buddies. :thumb:

Well I shorted out the fan thermoswitch and the relays were clicking but the fan wasn't kicking on. So my fan has gone bad.

Does anyone think that would cause the overheating issues COMPLETELY? I think it's possible but I'm not sure I just can't seem to justify all the problems leading to that BUT it would explain why it gets hot at idle and is fine when I'm cruising around.

Any input is ENCOURAGED. C'mon you guys. Anything.

When my fan thermoswitch went bad the temperature would skyrocket when it idled. I replaced that and no problems since then.

Thanks a ton! :thumb:

Gives me some hope that the problem is very small to what I thought it could have been. Once I get a new fan I will let everyone know what becomes of it.

Keep the opinions coming please!

well if you want to make sure your fan is toasted, un-plug the thermo-sensor switch(bottom of the radiator) and stick a paper clip in the plug(one end in each side to complete the circuit), and then turn your ignition on, if the fan works its your thermo-sensor switch, if not replace the fan. Hey i also just noticed your a fellow Utah DSMer, sweet. But about your rough idle are you throwing up any CEl's? If so i would trace that and see where it takes you. Well i hope i helped a bit.

Sweet. Utah dsmers are the shit! Check out www.utdsm.org if you haven't yet.

Yeah I did the hole paper clip ordeal. That is what I ment by I shorted out the switch (basically eliminate the switch as one of the problems). The fan did not come on while the cars ignition was on. My fan had been making some wierd noises lately so i guess it makes sense.

No I haven't thrown any CELs. Like I said everything "appears" normal except my O2 sensor is bad and it is throwing my fuel trims off (which could possibly be the cause but I'm still in doubt).

Anyone else?

Opps didn't see that you already bi-passed the thermo-sensor switch, well then yep your fan is shot. I have had both my fans go out, two thermo-sensor switches, 3 thermostats(auto zone fail safe they are crap), so me and my cooling system are very acquainted. Well good luck with everything.

I 'm already a member on there, I also use the same user name. I have a extra working fan if you want to buy it also.

Nice. I thought the name looked familiar. Draper is a DRIVE! But if I can't find one in the ogden area (Kim and Adam LOL) I will look into that. Thanks.

Yeah if it comes to that I'll pm you and let you know. You hitting up lagoon LOL?

Noob question: what temperaature are 1g dsm's supposed to operate at? My coolant runs a steady 220F. Thermostat is new and fans work. I am just wondering if this is too hot or if this is normal. Please advise. :talon:

Before all the issues in my car came up it was at 204-206.

After that the ECU starts to pull 1 degree of timing up until I think 224 and then it pulls another one. That is probably a little too hot if you ask me.

You should get a thermostat that opens 10 degrees sooner then the one you have now.

Yep I have a company party at Lagoon. Kapok6 your running a little hot, did it run that hot before you changed the thermostat? I've had so many problems with thermostats, the only one that i will stick in my car in a OEM thermostat from the dealer.

Kapok6 do you have a front mount intercooler, your mods suggest you need one so i guessed you just might have one. If so that could be the problem, the stock cooling system can only handle so much.

I was having a bad overheating problem this past week after putting my fmic on. i only had my slim fan on, and i hit 241* when i shut it off. I ended up keeping the stock fan on the left, and buying a slim fan on the right. I wired them up to a switch inside the car so they run constant with the car. It was 98* on the bank today when i drove by, and my car was running a consistant 199 in the heat of the day. Thats with a 33x10.5x3" intercooler blocking my radiator :thumb: the stock fan prevails!!

P.S. I am currently running a 180* thermostat in my car, i will be ordering a 160* from dsm motorsport, heres the link:

Talon96tsiAWD thats awesome that you got it to run at 199 all day long as it should, its always nice when something works out. I guess the stock fans are a little better then i thought.

No front mount, and as for how hot it ran before changing the thermostat, I have no idea what it ran at b/c I did not have a datalogger. I believe it has a 190 in it right now. :talon:

Kapok6, I would do some research about the 160 thermostat and see if it will work for you. Do you still have the original radiator it may not be flowing like it should, just a thought. Good luck :)

Yes, original radiator. :talon:
