alright, here it goes....my 97 GST has crankwalk, so i am gonna need a new engine when it goes out. i had my hopes on getting an evo III engine for it, but its gonna be around 4 grand just for the engine. so instead, i was thinking about getting a regular 4g63 block and just building it up. i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what some good parts would be to put in, and how much it would cost. the evo III comes with 270hp, and i figure if i can build one much less and i can get around 300hp maybe? my final goal is to have a streetable low 11 sec car, but for now i just wanna get a new engine in for under 3 grand....if anyone can help me out, i would really appreciate it.

Why would you buy a whole new engine? Just get a nice short block (~1600) and bolt all the old stuff back on. And I'm not sure but you might not even need a new block, I don't know what damage crankwalk can cause other than bearings. You can hit 300hp much cheaper this way. As for the streetable low 11's in a FWD car, this MAY cost a bit more.

I think a 6-bolt with 95 pistons will do. You won't need to get the EVO III engine. Only thing special about it is that the engine itself comes with a big 16g and big injectors. But you'll end up swapping those parts on anyways. Problem with a 6-bolt is you'll need 500+ worth of extra parts to swap it into your car.

As for being streetable with 11s. You can only achieve with with LSD, slicks, and probably a Green. With street tires you'll be spinning them way to much.

i would not rebuild the stock block out of your 97 because it will eventually walk again the best way to go would be to buy a 6 bolt with the big rods and put in the 95 pistons and remove balance shafts
it may cost you a little more but it will be worth it in the long run there are many guys running 11's with this setup as far as the lsd, slicks, and green you don't need lsd, and green would be nice but not neccessary
slicks = broken driveline parts friend of mine ran 11.9 with this block
small 16g, dunlop tires and stock driveline.

i wasn't gonna build my block up, i was gonna get a used block in good shape and build that up....however, i came across the magnus motorsports page and they provide built engines already.., does anyone know how good this company is?...if they are reliable, i might just get one from them....any feedback is appreciated. thanks

do you know of any other good places that build motors for less?

I think your best bet would be to do what a lot of local 2G guys here are doing and thats the 6 bolt upgrade. As a 2G DSM owner your two top concerns should be your tranny holding up and your crank. If you're gonna do something to rectify the crank walk, do it right and never worry about it again. The 6 bolt block is a very stout bottom end as it is and you'll never have to fear crankwalk again. That would be your best bet I think.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else here in saying that low 11s in a FWD 2G is gonna take A LOT of work. I wont say it's not possible though, there's a guy locally with a 1G FWD that's in high 10s/low 11s on slicks. Dont ever expect to see those kinds of times on street tires tho. The best I'd say you could get with the FWD on street tires is a mid 12. After that, adding anymore power will only result in slower 60 fts and higher trap speeds.

personally I bought a 6 bolt block from a site member, then I bought oversized pistons from www.partznet.com . I had a reputable machine shop put the block together with the 91 rods and 95 pistons and balanced it all. It was ALOT chepaer then any of these places online will do it for.

Anyone who knows ALOT about DSMs usually will charge you out your butt to work on them.

does anyone know of a good DSM shop in the Houston area....that is where i am prob gonna get the engine work done...unless there is a really good shop in the San Antonio area anyone knows about....around how much does an engine installation cost?

You should be able to find a used engine, with head and sometimes turbo for ~$1000.00.

Look here: Used Engines

For swap info look here: 1G engine in a 2G

*I think this is what you were looking for.
-$1000 engine
-$1000 extra parts and somebody to put it in
-$1000 extra parts (Big turbo/injectors.... or whatever you want)
-------------
$3000 your goal price

alright, change of plans....now i think i just want to go ahead and get a used shortblock....if i get a 6 bolt shortblock, will the rest of my stuff bolt onto it? also, if anyone knows where to get good quality decent priced shortblocks, let me know.....because if i can get a good deal on a shortblock, i think i can get a new turbo...now this is the tricky part, i want to get a new turbo, but want to make sure that the turbo and the other parts needed to make it work aren't over say 1000? is that even possible?...all i have right now is intake filter and exhaust...if anyone could give some info, that would be great

thanks

The 1G head is better. It is actually an upgrade for the 2G guys. You would be best off getting the whole engine.

Your $1000.00 Engine/Turbo idea is possible, but you will have to be patient:
*You can be patient, and look for a 1G engine with yellow injectos(510CC) and Big 16G turbo.
-Call all of the places from my link earlier, and ask if they have one w/ yellow injectors. Sooner or later you will find one.
-I've seen one sell on ebay with that setup for $1500.00.
-Just look around.

do the 1g's with the yellow injectors and the 16g make more power than the normal ones?....i would suppose so since they have bigger injectors and turbo.....one of my main concerns is getting the engine put in....i don't know of any reputable dsm shops in houston or san antonio...but thanks for the info

how hard do you think it would be to put in a new engine myself, with the help of some friends of course....i would have a month over christmas to do it, so time would not be a prob, also, i have seen ppl selling thier used 91 motors for around 500-750 bucks....would these be good buys?
