i've got a 96 gst with an ignition problem. my car died today.
-checked fuses:ignition fuse burnt out
-everytime i replace it,put the key in, turn key, imediatley burns out

i'm not very good with electronics, what could be the problem?

-could it be the ignition switch?if so do i have to pull the steering wheel like the chilton manual says?

please help thanks!!!

Check your Grounds ,all of them and check all if any soldering work that you or a friend might have done.My friend and I encountered the same thing last summer when we installed his ultra uber sound setup. I'm almost sure it's a ground ,but cant be absolutely positive since I cant look at the car in person.

well it's not the ignition switch :(

i'll try to check on my grounds. i did just replace all my speakers and put a sub and amp in. would a faulty ground for my amp cause my ignition to go out?? this sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a feeling, well the way we fixed the issue was we ran an intermidiate fuse, I cant remember the voltage but I'll ask him the next time we talk which should be tomorrow. This will keep your car fuse from blowing up every time.

well it's not the stereo :(
-i checked all the grounds
-it already had an inline fuse
-i totally took the radio out and disconnected the amp from any power

any other suggestions? could i have a faulty alternator causing this? or would that be out of the question? thanks for all the responses.

still blows the igniton fuse immidiately when i put the key in the acc (on)position

Blowing fuses is only cause by one thing: shorts. A disconnected ground or redundant ground will NOT blow a fuse. The easiest way to find the problem without the proper tools is: go buy a circuit breaker that plugs into the spot the fuse you keep blowing goes. This is so you don't keep blowing fuses and have to buy new ones. When it blows, you just close it. Next, start disconnecting power to one component at a time that will get power when you turn the key. Eventually you will find it.

Man I'm right with you on this problem, my car is doing the same thing, but I gave it a reason to, I guess, I washed my engine bay out and now it's doing this, has been for four days. I've pulled every connector in the engine bay, pulled the starter out, checked it, now I'm probably going to start pulling fuses inside, I can't seem to find where this short is at.... ohh and a circuit breaker is cheaper... heh, I bought a 30 amp cycling breaker for like 2.00 at O'reillys and used some spade connectors/wire to rig it up. If you find anything, let me know, and I'll do so as well....

ALright I found a way to get the car running, on mine, I found a plug on the back of the fuse box inside the car, it has two black wires and I believe four blues running out of it, all decently thick (can't really guesstimate on the gauge) I unplugged that from the car, lost my radio, air conditioner fan, blower, and oil pressure gauge (just not usable) that allows me to start the car and let it run, maybe even drive.... More updates when I figure out where the short is (I think it's in the a/c fan wires somewhere)

Allright I've solved my ignition fuse problem, (and the whole reason is ridiculous) I pulled my ecu, and when I reinstalled it, I mashed the power wire for my gauges between the ecu bracket and it's mounting point. So look at your wires before the fuse box, it's hard until you actually start narrowing down the possibilities.... just check anything that doesn't have a fuse named for it.... good luck! (and don't forget if all else fails, just pull the connectors on the back of the interior fuse panel, one at a time, that's what really helped me out)
