Ok, to start things off, I just bought a 91 Fwd Talon Tsi. The car is missing the bottom end and wiring harness. I was thinking about just running a 90 wiring harness, etc... but anyways, here is my question. Before anyone flames me, I'm not new to dsm's and I searched everything on this site but I just can't find the things I want to hear. First off, I can get a Non-turbo block cheap. I was thinking about using it and just getting the block bored .20 over and goin with the Topline Rebuild kit from SBR. Now will everything bolt right and is everything the same as a Turbo block like pulleys, gears, water pump, etc...I am gonna get a new knock sensor from SBR also and I hear the hole is just capped off with a plug on N/T's. Also, are the cranks the same in N/T - Turbo's like strength-wise, etc...If so, will turbo 1g rods bolt right up? I noticed in SBR's rebuild kit, you can choose from .10, standard, .20 over bearings for the crank. I should stick with standard right? What exactly is .10 over bearings? Are they for cranks that have been regrounded or knife-edged? Sorry if I sound stupid, but I just want to make sure everything is gonna be OK if I go with this block. I need opinions from anyone and please be honest about your opinions. Thx.

And for the rebuild I'll recommend to use Clevitte bearings all the way around, rather then Top line they dont have good reviews on engine kits, Lifters work great from topline, but dont get that brand for engine rebuild kit.

If you dont have the oil housing, you should try to get a 90' oil filter housing with the external oil cooler, even if its a used one, and tap it from there and get the oil feed line for the turbo.

Ya I know it won't have the oil squirters. So your saying the n/t crank is different as in strength wise? I know I need to get the 1g rods but I was thinking about gettin the .20 over Topline rebuild kit from SBR so why go with the 2g pistons? The only reason I say that is I dont think I will have to worry about getting the Topline pistons machined to fit on 1g rods like I would with 2g pistons, or would I?. Sorry if I didnt make that clear in my last post. I just want to know if everything will work out. Also, is everything else the same?

Rick

Well the motor that was in before was a 90 so it has the Front mount oil cooler and stuff. Are you just saying the bearings are not good b/c if so I can get clevite bearings. Thx.

Well I have heard bad things about the topline kit and we know for sure that a 1g rod and 2g piston combo can hold 500 hp so why not go with that while it's all apart? As far as the crank ... I'm not sure how much "weaker" the n/t is, but I had 2 machine shops tell me that the hardening on the n/t crank is very slim if not non existant. The 1g turbo cranks have hardening that goes to about .020" they tell me. Unless you plan to get 150000 miles out of the engine you are building or you make 500 hp you probably won't notice a difference, but why not just do it right?

Turbo cranks and rods are the same as nonturbo, i have had them latying side by side. they have different casting numbers, but they are the same. you best and cheapest way ofgetting your car going is but a used imported n/t off ebay for $525 and put the turbo stuff on it. you can't get a motor built for even close to that.

The size of the rod bearings refers to the cramk being turned or ground, say .020" which one writer said was the depth of the stock nitriding treatment. If you plan to keep this car I agree to do it right and go for a proper turbo engine for $525. Mark

Turbo 1g "big rods" are the same as n/t rods? Thx alot 1fast97gsx for being so helpful btw. I just plan on building my car and for now, realistically, going for maybe a low 13 second car running with fwd on a 14b. You think the topline kit would be good for this seeing as I dont even want to come close to 500 hp? And as for funds, I dont have a whole lot of money and the topline kit sounds like it's the best bang for the buck if not going for alot of power.
