Vancouver,
Is it possible to swap in an EVO8 motor into a 2G?

I know they are the same engine designation... but I am guessing it is NOT a straightforward drop in.

Any insight? Thanks!

If this doesn't belong here-- please move this posting to another tech forum.

hey whats up

as far as swapping im sure it is possible for the right amount of money but alls i know is that the EVO 8 4g63 cams are on the pass side and not the drivers side. so i think that will make it a little harder to swap.......i think the evo 3 has the right side 4g63 but im unsure

layyyyt

it's not a very easy swap... in fact i don't think i have ever heard of it being done they are 180 degrees out of whack (as i like to say) . i don't know much of what would need to be done because i have never done it. but i do know it would probably be more worthwhile to drop in an evo engine or 6 bolt ...

this'll be locked for sure.

as others said, just by plain looking at the two motors you can see it's gonna be a PITA. timing belts are on opposite sides :| you'd have to fab motor supports, harnesses.. etc just to make it work. and all that work for what? to have the same engine just reverse?

If someone has the money, I dont think it would be a bad project. But cost wise, I dont think a regular Joe should take on a task like this without it ever being done before. :dsm:

Wow this subject has been brought up 3 times this week in 3 different threads. In the future you might try using the wonderful search function we have at our dispose.

Yes it can be done, just as anything can be done with enough money. It probably is not a common thing since it is the same engine. But hey if you wanted to spend a bunch of money unnecessarily to say you have an Evo 8 engine then go for it.

I'm sure you could rig it up the same way that v8 guys use marine engines in their cars. They just replace the starter and distributor so that the engine will rotate the opposite direction.

pin - like said before, ANYTHING is possible if your pockets are deep enough.

but the main question to this oncoming curiousity is WHY??? it's the same friggin motor [ slight diff. of course ] :|

and yes, an EVO III b16G is more than enough evo and not enough DSM for me :p

ok so reading this post I got this
the 7 bolt Evo8 engine swap can be done if your pockets are deep enough - true, but so is anything if your pockets are deep enough

what about the 6bolt Evo3 engine ? now I seen it posted somewhere on this thread that it may be more of a better swap as the cams are on the same side.

has anyone done that swap ? my pockets will be deep enough when I switch to a better job, so I will be able to purchase the car, and will soon be needing a 6bolt engine swap, and I was thinking of swapping in an 6bolt evo engine as it will give me a little bit of a headstart in the more power direction :D but also a more reliable engine then the 7bolt and it's possible crankwalk issues

I am sorry if this was considered a thread Hijack, and I did use the search function, but it couldn't find any results, except to a couple evo8 engine swap threads

ever since i got into dsms i was wondering the exact same thing, if the evo engine and eclipse engine are the same then why are they so different? i mean the evo is newer so age problems would be fixed like the grinding trannys, maybe a lot of ppl here dont have trannys that grind very much, but mine is a bi*** sometimes if its cold. I was also wondering the same thing because our engines come with 200hp, and the evo comes with almost 300hp, so obviously something is different there am i wrong? if i'm wrong just verbally slap me and i'll shut up cause i am new.

wasss up guys.
this is off the subject but where do you guys get engines and evo engines? i look everywhere and i couldnt find a good one. so if you guys know where it is please reply thanks

1. Evo Engines are 7bolts. Evo I-III can be swapped into 2gs.

2. Swapping the engine will give you little to no power gains in itself, as the engines are virtually identical other than the turbo and injectors that came with them.

3. You might try searching "6bolt swap" or something along those lines as this topic has been covered in-depth and then some.

Evo I-III engines are not very different. Evo IV-8 engines ARE very different, due to the fact that the block mounts on the opposite side of the car, etc.

i mean the evo is newer so age problems would be fixed like the grinding trannys, maybe a lot of ppl here dont have trannys that grind very much, but mine is a bi*** sometimes if its cold.

And engine has nothing to do with the transmission grinding. Get a rebuild.

Yeah, lots is different. Injectors, ECU, turbo, boost level, intercooler... bolt those things on, and you'll have a car that makes 300 horsepower too.

one perhaps intersting thing would be the posibilty of a better transmission with the evo3 engine... i dont know how they all swap around but who knows. i know some place makes a bad ass dog box for old evos.

sweet got my ass handed to me on that, but its useful info thanx dsmayhem
but I thought the Evo4 down engines were 6 bolt, hence the 4G63T
amd the 7 bolts 4G64T......correct me if I'm wrong, but all the research I did left that impression on me, but all the info was on ppls websites and I couldn't find a really reliable source :(

The 4g63 is the 2.0l they use on turbo eclipses lancers and a few others. The 4g64 is the 2.4l they used in some of the non turbo spyders. Do more searches on this website as well as dsmtalk, lots of good info. There are some cool threads on doing 63 to 64 swaps and plenty of other interesting things to dream and ponder doing with our cars.
