I never really thought about this till someone aske me...And I know that DSMs have rev limiters and all but do they have speed limiters in the 2nd generation?

I believe that the 2g GSX are the only ones without speed limiters. I know that the GS-T has one. Its at 135 or maybe 137. The reason for this is that the GSX came from the factory with Z rated tires. All other models came with tires onlky rated to 139 so the government makes them limit the car to a safe spped with those tires. It is possible to remove (I haven't done it, but there are sites about it, you have the remove/add stuff to your ECU).

My 1998 GSX cuts out at ~140 MPH, so the GSX's must have it to.Either that or its hitting the RPM limiter at that speed, I've never noticed.

So I guess my 98 GSX isn't a 2G AWD? I bought it brand new so nothing has been switched/swapped, and I definately have a 140 mph speed limiter, I've hit it more times than I can count.

Taken right from the VFAQ:
"Theory
Because Mitsubishi uses H-rated tires on all of its FWD turbo DSMs, it must limit the speed of the car to 130 MPH just to be safe. 130 MPH is typically the safe limit of H-rated tires. Mitsubishi put Z-rated tires on the AWD DSMs. None of the AWD versions of the vehicle seem to have the 130 MPH speed limiter."

So what are you telling me?

LightningGSX, my car is the same. I've noticed that I hit a limiter around 135 and I can't push it past. I've also noticed that my throttle body has "ECImulti" on it. I've been told that California emissions cars have them. Can anyone attest to this? I was just under the assumption that since it's got Cali emissions, the speed limiter might be another one of those Cali-only quirks. Haven't tried the whole ECU/resistor thing yet to get rid of it.

I have done the speed limiter mod. I honestly thought it was just BS until I was on I-695 once with this Vette, and I got up to 153mph bufore I really had to slow down.

It does work. :thumb:

Personally I've never heard of a single 2G AWD having a speed limiter

Matter of Fact if yo reach 140mph then you've already passed the normal limiter and more then likely what your running into is your car doesn't have the power to keep on going.

I'll say this though My friend Andy (Lightening you know whom I'm talking about since your local) had a 99 GS-T. and he hit speed limiter at 130mph all day long.

Well I did the VFAQ removal to my 96 GS-T ECU (basically all you do is clip/cut one end of the resister located in slot 255 or 256, GSX's should have either zero resistors or 2 resistors)

So we tried to swap that into his 99 GS-T. first off the car had 28K miles on it. and the ECU's were completely different talking even the plugs wouldn't attach the my ECU? I have no idea why and no-one we've ever talked has run into this before. Who knows he bought the car modded.

At anyrate we tried to do theVFAQ on his ECU and it was completely different them my 95-96 ECU. there were computer chips instead of resistors. the whole board was different. Which now that I'm thinking about it kind of is leading me to think there might have been and aftermarket system in the car.

Do do the whole VFAQ takes all of 10 minutes. And I've personally taken my GS-T up to 168mph twice and over 150 countless times.
I've posted the video's on here either last year or the year before.

I've only had my GSX though up over 140mph 1 or 2 times as it just doesn't handle like my FWD did.

ps: Lightening your car shouldn't have a speed limiter where did you buy it? and is it possible that someone either at the dealership or someone you had do work on it swapped it out? Reason I ask was I took my car to a local mitsu dealership and they put 500 miles on my car over 4 days and then returned it saying it's to modified we can't work on it. then proceded to tell one of my other local club member's about how he'd taken it home and raced it, etc etc.

at 140 my cars tach jumps between 4 and 5 , so most likeley i would fisrt figure it had to be the speed limiter

I bought mine new from metro mitsu in bloomington, its possible but I doubt they swapped the ECU on any service visits.Mine had a tendancy to hit MAF overflow/fuel cut, when it was new and mod-free(do other stock DSMs have this problem?).So I guess its possible I was hitting fuel cut at that speed, but it happens everytime at about 140, regardless of ambient conditions. Its cut out at that speed at least 100 times(no bs), its not a lack of power, its definately a limiter(RPM drops at least 1000 as soon as I hit 140).Since mine is a late 98 model, maybe it and the 99's have different ECUs?

Come to think of it, I did a "top speed test" the very day I bought it, so no swapping done at the dealer.

about how much is a GSX ECU worth?

Agim, why not just clip the resistor off your ECU?

If your really looking for an AWD ECU, I belive that Kavin may still have his avalible for $50. If you intrested, let me know an I can contact him for you.
