Broke my center diff
Posted 04-10-2008 at 11:26 AM by talonTSIDriver
Well, only a few days til RA weekend and i blew my diff. Not a good thing to happen so close to a track event. However i could not stand leaving the car in the garage knowing its broken, I took the tranny out right away, took apart the gearbox, replaced the diff with a stock one for now, and put her all back together and in the car the same night. it was a late night, but was worth it. I will have to take it easy on the launches from now on until the 4-spider gets installed.
Here is the aftermath:

as of 3:00am, she was all back together and fully recovered from the diff transplant:

Damn! That's a lot of work to do in one night. It sucks worse not doing it though knowing it's parked broken.
How bad is it to swap out the diff? I've never torn apart a transmission, but I'd like to upgrade my TRE trans with a 4 spider one day for peace of mind. Good luck this weekend at RA. Have you had the red car on track yet? And what are the plans for the other car or are you racing them both? |

I sold the silver talon (tear). Road America will be popping the cherry for the red talon. The talon is my primary race car, I also have an older omni GLH turbo that i use for some auto-x events (slower stuff).
4-Spider is a must if you plan on launching your car multiple times (like me). Taking out a trans really is not too hard, at least not when you've done it about 100 times. As far as removing the diff, if you have a service manual it may not be too hard. I had a good friend help me with diff. You also need a few specialty tools as well. |

Cool, didn't know you sold the other car.
I know taking out the transmission is a bitch as I'm on the cars 4th clutch. I was more curious about actually tearing it open and swapping diffs. Sounds like something I'll probably end up leaving to the professionals if specialty tools are needed. Not that I have plans on upgrading to a 4 spider soon due to some other priorities I have for my car. Good luck and let me know how it goes. I'm getting ready for the DSMs first autox in 2 weekends and maybe an HPDE day on May 10th. |
