So I bought a 95 TSi AWD a week ago today. When I bought the car it had a low vacuum. Being new to the turbo scene, I didn't think a whole lot about it at first. I was also boosting about 10psi peaking at 11psi on the stock boost controller. This seemed about normal as well.

I pulled the BCS off the car in order to do the free mod for another 2psi. After removing the BCS, I realized the free mod was already done.

Both of these signs pointed to a vacuum leak in the system. Since I have been pretty busy trying to get my 98 RS back up and running, I haven't done any troubleshooting until tonight.

I had a friend pull the codes and found a P0170. After some searching, it turns out most people replace the HO2S. Me being frugal decided to look at other measures before I started throwing parts at the car.

I found a wonderful thread on here for the Taboo Speed Shop vacuum diagram. I looked over this for some time before I ever popped the hood on the car.

The P0170 told me that there was a lean condition on the car. I decided to attack the FPR first. Within a minute of following vacuum lines I found the first cracked hose. Cranked the car back up and still had poor vacuum. So I traced a bit further on the FPR vacuum lines and found quite a large crack in the vacuum line. After cutting off another inch of vacuum hose and reattaching it to the car, I started it again.

18in/hg of vacuum at idle now instead of 10in/hg. Feeling quite pleased with myself, I went out for a test drive. The car now holds about 14psi instead of 10psi and peaks out at 15psi instead of 12psi.

I am still quite happy that this was a simple issue to resolve and look forward to spending more time this week on the RS without worrying about the TSi.

Definitely enjoying the TSi. I really want the RS back though. It's so tossable. The TSi needs suspension. Just doesn't feel right.

A boost leak test may be a simpler fix instead of tracing all of the lines. It will also show if any couplers/intercoolers hoses are also leaking and causing a weak vacuum. 18in/hg seems pretty low still I think.

A tester is pretty easy to build, and just need a small compressor to do it.

Fix all the boost leaks, and then maintenance, maintenance, maintenance!

    Good luck!

The BLT is coming soon. Just wanted to trace a few lines tonight. The car is almost stock. Injen intake, crushed 1g BOV and a cat back. I've had it for a week and I haven't had much time to do anything with it. I want to get the RS back on the road soon so I can find a second job to feed my car habit.

Beast. Normal idle for a mostly stock is 20in/hg. 18 is better then 10, so its not that much off. Mine moved around between 17-20 during idle.

Keep up with it, have fun.

18inHG is good, 20inHG would be excellent - perfect compression.

Do a compression test followed up with a cylinder leak down test to really determine your engine's health.

Will do. I'll work on that after the RS is back on the road. Just trying to keep things simple this week. On-call for work right now and I can't have the TSi down for too long. I picked up about 10' of vacuum line tonight and some oil. Did the oil change already. Will work on the vacuum lines tomorrow hopefully to see if I can get rid of the P0170 without buying a new HO2S.

Thanks for all the input so far. It is all much appreciated.

Awesome. I managed to break a door handle. I guess I should head out to the junkyard later and get another one.
