Project "What Was I Thinking" Catch Up Post

Well, I've been posting to my Wordpress blog for the last few month in regards to project "What was I thinking". So I'm going to use this post as a catch up.
Cleaning up the engine bay. We started with this . . .

Cleaned her up to this . . .

We pulled the motor out of the black Eclipse (hoping to freshen it up with some new timing components and throw it in) to find crank walk.
Here it is at 0

Here it is at .045 end play

Looks like we're building a motor
New Carpet, Paint and a RS65
I ordered some black carpet from MotorSouth Carpet and it showed up a week or so ago. Looks pretty good (I haven't taken pictures yet). We haven't tried putting it in yet. We wanted to get the door jams painted first. She'll be getting sprayed flat black when we paint her.

She'll also be wingless and sideskirt-less. Here's a picture of hatch holes getting filled in. There is still a bit of sanding to do.

Here's a picture of my RS65 I just picked up (it's actually my old one from my '97 Talon). It looks small compared to the GT42's we've had! Oh, and there's the AEM wide band I picked up awhile ago.

Remember Back in the Day When a FMIC Cost You $1,000?
Those days are over. I picked up this used SSAC (ssautochrome) intercooler for my "What was I thinking project" for $200. I remember back (ok, 2001'ish) in the day you couldn't touch a FMIC for less then 1k. If you saw a car with a FMIC you knew it had to be fast! Thanks to Ebay, SSAC and XS Power they're practically dirt cheap. Is this a good thing? Probably not, but it's going to work well enough for my application. The quality isn't to bad. I guess we'll see how it works out

hell yes i remember those days...and i didnt get my 2g until 03...the full kits were still upwards of 6-700, XS/SSAC was just getting on the scene, and people didnt trust it...
I got my core off of SSAC, and its huge, and runs fine...and who says that today a car with a FMIC ISNT fast? =) You could probably get a bigger core, esp for that turbo, but if you're happy I'm happy...haha |
