Evo Brembo Rear Brakes - cont'd
Posted 09-30-2009 at 06:10 AM by housegsx
I just got back from vacation a few days ago and was able to get this finished up last night night.
First thing I did was replace my proportioning valve. That was nice and easy, it only took me a few minutes because I don't have cruise control or a battery etc in the way. Before I put the new one on I screwed each open line into the air nozzle from my compressor and blew out each line.

New valve

Once the Evo brake lines came in I was already disappointed because they were the wrong color. I tried to fit them anyway, but the Evo lines are just too long with the wrong fittings to work nicely on a DSM.
You can see the bend in the line is kind of tight, it's also slightly twisted, and the line touches the knuckle. No good. I'd like a line with a 90 degree bend on the banjo bolt and a slightly shorter hose.

For now I am just using my SS DSM lines with the addition of a copper washer.
After all the lines were tightened I bled the brakes with ATE Blue. It was nice to see when the fluid went from yellowish to blue and I knew everything was clean and air free.

I bolted the wheels on and it should be ready to go now. The plan is to take it for a drive tonight if the rain stops, making sure everything feels right and bed in the new pads and season the rotors.
Here are a couple pics behind the wheels. 17x8 with tons of clearance.

That looks great, actually the same exact setup I'm running right down to the brake fluid. Well my wheels are silver, but probably shouldn't have gone black
. Are those the 40mm offset ones? If they are, I do want to warn you that the fronts probably won't fit without a spacer, unless you're running something different. It LOOKS like it will, but the brakes wouldn't clear on mine without a 3mm spacer.Posted 09-30-2009 at 04:44 PM by 1slow2door

Nice work, thanks for the write up.
I think I have the same wheels too, in silver. 17x8 40mm offset. I wanna do this upgrade some day, so I'd love to know if the fronts fit.Posted 09-30-2009 at 05:14 PM by gbell

1slow2door, thanks for the warning, and yes they are 17x8 +40mm. Really, they won't fit? I know the calipers are huge but Evo wheels are 38mm. Are they just really tight, or do they actually hit? I thought the wheel design seems to have a lot of clearance to offer. Oh well, I wonder if the calipers can be clearanced at all if needed. I don't really want to use spacers because the wheel are flush as hell already. 3mm might not even be noticeable though.
I need to find a used Evo rotor and do a test fit. I'm in no huge rush to do the fronts immediately. I don't feel like dropping the money on the jdm knuckles right now. When my Baer rotors are totally shot, then I'll upgrade.Posted 10-01-2009 at 07:53 AM by housegsx

It's no problem, just figured I'd say something before you found out when you tried putting it together someday. Those stupid wheels are deceiving! I thought the whole time that it'd be no problem only to put them on, spin the wheel and have it stop and rip paint off the caliper... It doesn't catch on the face of the wheel, it catches on the rounded part of the spoke towards the hub. That part catches on the very bottom of the rounded part of the caliper. It's enough to stop it solid.
It's stuck in this picture (test fit)

Right here (perfect picture to show it):

The spacer does bring the wheel out a bit further, but it's not much. It's just barely outside of the fender. The suspension is currently in pieces but if I throw it back together, I'll take some pictures for you. I don't see why you couldn't clearance them, but would that mess with the center point of the caliper/rotor? Have you looked into doing a different proportioning valve? Just wondering if there has been any new finds since last year when I did all of my research.Posted 10-01-2009 at 08:52 AM by 1slow2door

Ah, I see! And nice black calipers! I want mine black eventually, that's why I didn't like those red lines that I ordered. Btw, are you using the DSM lines for the rear as well?
I don't know what you mean by "mess with the center point of the caliper/rotor"... Nothing would change, just wondered if there was enough meat where the caliper is rubbing to shave it down. But if it's the piston bore that needs shaved, I think I already know the answer to that.
For the proportioning valve, I was going to use a non-abs 6-port valve, but then I found the pressure split sends less to the rear than the 4-port. I was doing this just to clean up the engine bay and simplify the braking system, as my abs has been non-functional for some time.
So right now I still have the abs module in place until I try this, whenever I feel like making new lines...
Sorry for the horrid drawing I made but you get the idea.
I think that might work out good. The 6-port valve just has those T's build in to it I believe. Of course it would be nice to completely redo all lines and have an adjustable valve in the mix.Posted 10-01-2009 at 09:59 AM by housegsx

Thanks! They took FOREVER to paint though, waaaay too many coats of paint haha. Black would look sick with your black wheels I think. I see what you mean, I thought that maybe you were talking about spacing it back a bit. I still have my ABS completely in so I probably shouldn't worry about it much then it seems, but good to know if I ever junk it. New lines and adjustable valve would be great for sure!
The way I had my brake lines set up was kind of bootleg. I couldn't get the DSM lines to work on the back, so I put the Evo lines on. Luckily the set I bought came with the back two Evo lines, but only one front. I used the DSM lines in front that I had, but they were a good two inches shorter, if not a bit more. I actually just got those same red lines in Evo flavor to put on. I have the same issue in the rear though, if you happen to find better fitting rear lines, let me know! The calipers looked pretty much aligned to me last time I looked, but I'll take a peak again when it's somewhat back together and I could give you a good answer.Posted 10-01-2009 at 02:11 PM by 1slow2door
