In the last couple of weeks things have been quiet in the RochesterDSM One Lap world but as we sat and waited for news from Magnus Motorsports a stead stream of parts have been arriving. We had planned for the build to take a few weeks and we would have the car back first week of April. Little did we know that once Marco gets moving on something mountains move.
The RochesterDSM One Lap team is proud to announce that three-speed.com is back on the team this year for their 2nd year sponsoring our efforts on the One Lap of America.
In case you didn’t know, or forgot from last year, Three-Speed is the authority in designing scattershields for racing applications.
This past weekend Steve and I trailered up his Evo X to Magnus Motorsports so Marco could begin the process of transforming it into a One Lap road racer. We had a great time and learned a lot about the inner workings of Magnus Motorsports, the people, and Marco himself. We took lots of pictures and set in motion a build plan that is going to be pretty epic.
The RochesterDSM One Lap team is proud to announce that KW automotive North America has signed on to sponsor us this year.
KW sent us a set of there amazing Clubsport series coil-over suspension kits. The Clubsport's are as step up from the well known Varient 3 coilovers and they offer increased spring rates with matched improvements to the valving. In addition, the Clubsport's feature...
The RochesterDSM One Lap team is proud to announce that Jay Racing has sponsored the One Lap Evo X with one of their brand new Jay Racing fuel pumps.
Jay Racing sent us one of there brand new Pro Series part# PT342 a standard replacement for the Walbro 342 high pressure pump (AKA Walbro 255HP High Pressure 255 LPH). This pump outflows the Bosch Motorsports 044 and draws less current...
The RochesterDSM One Lap team is proud to announce that Dunlop Tire has signed on to provide tires for the One Lap Evo X. Dunlop is sending us a set of there awesome Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs in 265/35-18 which will work perfectly with our Rota Grid 18×9.5 wheels.
Tires, tires is what wins a race. – Robert Duvall in ‘Days of Thunder’
The RochesterDSM One Lap of America team is proud to announce that Forced Performance has signed on to sponsor us this year.
Forced Performance is sending us one of there killer Evo X "Green" turbos. With its 73mm HTA compressor wheel and revised 65mm exhaust wheel (designed like the Evo X Red) this turbo packs a punch. All of that high tech wheel goodness is carefully installed in...
The One Lap of America team of Stephen Burke and Tim Harper have partnered with Magnus Motorsports to help build a competitive track car for the 2011 One Lap of America race. Marco Passante and the team at Magnus Motorsport are going to transform our stock EVO X from a competent track car to a monster, track clawing, Goliath slaying machine.

Let me tell you how wonderful it sounds to be entering a Mitsubishi Evo X into One Lap of America for 2011.
First of all, One Lap is a survival race, so our expectations of taking a stock Evo X and surviving are pretty good. The car has no mechanical issues, hasn't seen any of the NY winter roads and isn't starting to rot out, and for the most part would be a great car to take a cruise...
RochesterDSM team announcement.
The RochesterDSM team, after a long and lengthy struggle, has decided to make a change for the 2011 One Lap of America race. In 2011 the 1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 which has served us proudly, will be parked and in its place will be Steve's 2008 EVO X. This was not an easy choice for us as we have enjoyed not only the power, performance, and fun the VR4 offers...
I've dropped enough hints lately so everyone should know by now that there is a split coming in the RochesterDSM one lap team. Chris and Sean, who won the class in 2010, have teamed up with fellow EvoX drivers Paul and Barry. Chris and Sean put together a design and AMS was brought on board to build it. No expense was spared and the results are..well..they're just nutty.
I leave tomorrow morning for the 2010 One Lap of America race. I am looking to build a list of go to guys along the route in case of emergency. If you are located near these tracks or somewhere along the route between them and think you might be in a position to help please PM your contact information.
The aerodynamic package on the One Lap VR-4 is complete with the addition of a custom rear wing. You can read all about it and check out the photos here on our website. http://wp.me/priSZ-
Streettunedmotorsports.com has given me free reign of there dyno last Friday morning and afternoon. Last year we put down 355hp on a conservative tune while running 100% duty cycle on a set of Denso 660’s. This year things are a bit different.
Handling the fueling this year is a brand new set of FIC 1050cc injectors which are big enough to be corn ready if need be. The car has also...
By now its no longer a secret that the VR-4 is getting a wing. Not just a “ricer” looking wing but a real-deal if you have to ask you can’t afford it type of wing. The deal was too good to pass up so we went for it. What does a rear wing do? In simplest terms it pushes down on the back of the car. The faster you go the harder it pushes. The angle of the wing can be adjusted to “dial” in the...
…as promised I have some updated photos which show the tank installed. I wanted it to fit tighter to the fuse box but the two wire looms would not move enough to let it fit. So it sits an inch or so closer to the valve cover then I wanted but I still think it fits well. For now, I’ve also decided to cap off the PCV system. I may or may not bring it back depending how the tank works without it....
TunersNation has stepped up and sponsored the One Lap VR-4 with a new set of brakes. It’s no easy task matching the stopping power and economical maintenance cost of the Baer Track system it replaces. So when Garfield called with the news I was sceptical at first but when the parts started showing up and I could actually put them in my hands it became clear that these new brakes are up to the task....
In 2009 the One Lap VR-4 struggled with crank case pressure and oil control. We were using the stock 3/8″ fitting off the valve cover feeding to a .75 quart catch can. The stock PCV system was retained with a new PCV valve. We found that after a 4 minute hot lapping session the catch can would fill and blow oil out of the filter all over the engine bay. That meant that we not only risked...
The Rochester DSM One Lap Team is proud to announce that we have a new sponsor for our 2010 trip. Three-Speed.com has signed up to be an official sponsor this year and will be displayed proudly on the One Lap Evo X.
ThreeSpeed started with roots deep in the Galant VR-4 community as Harry Blanchard built up one of the most pristine and iconic Galant VR-4 builds that the community had...
In 2009, before this entire adventure began, we knew that the VR4 wouldn’t run smoothly unless we could get a solid ECU management solution in place. When we asked around to see if somebody would let us borrow an ECMlink for the trip, ECM Tuning stepped up to the plate. They provided us with a new version 3 system of their amazing platform. The car wouldn’t have run half as good as it did without...
Last summer Andre at Pina Motorsports introduced his chromoly rear upper control arms for the 1G AWD and VR-4 platforms. They feature fully tig welded ends, heim joints, and a grease able ball joint end. The fine members of the GalantVR4.org took up a collection and purchased a set for the RochesterDSM One Lap team.
Installing them is simple. Just unbolt the ball joint and give...

Tuners Nation was kind enough to donate a set of there 1G AWD/VR-4 rear sub-frame and mustache brace bushing sets. But why would you want to install these bushings?
The job of a bushing in a passenger car is different then it is in a race car. A passenger car has to be smooth, handle well, and not do anything “twitchy” if the driver tosses it around. A race car doesn’t care if the...
The Rochester DSM One Lap team is currently looking for additional sponsors to help us offset the cost of this trip. With a worldwide audience, the One Lap of America, offers a unique opportunity to get your company name or your brand spread across America. The race itself gains a lot of attention, both online and in media print. There are hundreds of printed media (Magazines, Newspapers, etc)...
We have created a Rochester DSM One Lap fan Page. I think when this all started, we didn’t appreciate the difference between a Facebook Group and a Facebook Page.
Once we started on the trip itself, it became very difficult to maintain an Internet connection long enough to update everything and the Facebook group fell behind. Having a Facebook Page will allow us to post updates from...
Last year Steve, Mike, and I piloted the One Lap VR4 to a very respectable rookie finish. Hell, even getting that car home was a win for us. But what really made the trip a success was all the people that were involved and specifically this online community.
For 2010 there have been some big changes to the RochesterDSM One Lap team. The big news this year is we are bringing two cars...
The RochesterDSM One Lap of America held its kick-off meeting last night to plan and organize its effort for next years effort. Although we are not ready to let the cat out of the bag the 2010 effort should be both bigger and faster so keep an eye out as the One Lap VR4 gets ready for May of 2010. You can read more about it on our website here.
The trip into Beaverun was grueling. We started the day before in South Carolina and then traveled 106 miles to the BMW testing grounds for a quick lap around there test track and finally we trekked nearly 600 miles up to Beaverun. We got into the Hotel around 2am and were up at 6am to go racing. Although we seemed OK the three of us were beat up pretty good and what...
I’ve always loved the 12 hour endurance races at Sebring. Its such a tuff race track with lots of speed and plenty of punishment both for the car and for the driver. I think its harder then the 24 hour at Daytona. From the start of One Lap I’ve wanted to drive it not because I expect to do well but because I expect to be challenged. Over three miles long with 17 turns with...
Today’s Talladega event is sponsored my Mitsumedia.com.
Yesterday I was disappointed in my performance in the autocross. It’s supposed to be my specialty and the best I could muster was 14th overall. Mike and Steve got together and decided to let me run Talladega so I could test the car out with the new control arms and get some more seat time before Sebring. It wasn’t my turn to...
We hit a huge pothole after the Autobahn event and snapped the bolt in the rear Ingalls upper control arm. we got about half and inch of the bolt back in and we are under way but its not going to hold up very long.
If anyone near cincinatti or florence kentucy has either an ingalls control are or a STOCK rear upper control arm we need your help.
We want to keep posting in the same BLOG thread to keep this organized. However, this is Stephen's (nrvous on this board) report from this morning's skid pad.
Last thing we did before we left our borrowed garage space Friday night was to throw rainX on the windshield. Running the skid pad wet, means that there are sprinklers running and spraying out onto the course from the inside....
The One Lap team had two events today, the first one being the wet skid pad at the Tire Rack facility in South Bend.
The skid pad is the testing grounds used by Tire Rack to rate their tires on different vehicles. The concept is easy. You drive around the circle as fast as possible, which gets recorded on a time. By recording time around the circle, they are able to calculate the...
Today was registration and decal day hosted at the Tire Rack facility in South Bend. We used a better part of the day to clean the car up and install most of the Sponsor decals.
Let me just say I hate F'ing decals. No wonder guys charge an arm and a leg to install them. Almost as bad as painting stripes.
The VR4 is a hit. We had a constant stream of on lookers and...
Mike was late this morning. We wanted to get on the road by 8am but it was closer to 9am before we finally rolled out. With the new Dunlops the VR4 pulled the trailer like a dream.
I drove the first leg. Our first tank of gas wasn't impressive. We only managed slightly better then 17mpg. Steve took over the second leg of driving and about two seconds after it started to rain. ...
The days proceeding our departure became a blur. I have updates and pictures to post from every day, but some how time was stolen from me.
This morning the team assembled somewhere in Penfield to fill every crevace of space left in the trailer and trunk as we headed out on our 10 day journey. For us the first leg of the trip is actually getting to the start of the race, in South Bend...
Just some photo's from packing today. All of our sponsor decals are in and we started to put some on. We still have a lot left but I didn't get shots of those. More to come tomorrow.
Sunday was our last full day of work before the start of One Lap. Steve and Chris joined me on Sunday to finish up some of the little things.
Steve worked on completing the installation of the power inverter and we now have 1500W of AC anytime we need it. That's going to come in hand if we ever need a drill or grinder and it allows us to have full AC power in the car so keeping laptops...

A Friday drive in sunny 75 degree weather in a rally inspired 355hp One lap VR4 with working CRUISE CONTROL!
Yep, I fixed it and in the end is was simple. At the beginning I didn't have power to the cruise and the horn didn't work. A fuse fixed that. The next thing I did was to remove the clutch switch mod that was in the car. That didn't fix it. Then I swapped the entire cruise control...

We rolled the car into Street Tuned Motorsports yesterday afternoon to put the car on their dyno and to enlist the aid of Emery in getting the car tuned with the ECMLink. It was a bit of a learning curve for us all, getting to play with the new ECMLink version 3 software.
Our goals were simple. First I needed to learn how to tune with ECMlink and Emery was good enough to give me a...

Steve and I spent a couple of hours working on the little things. We had tee'd into the BOV line when we installed the FP3052 turbo. At the time we didn't want to drill and tap the turbo for a boost source. The turbo is on loan and we want to return it in the same condition we received it in. So I installed a nipple in the lower intercooler pipe to provide boost to the boost controller. ...
Saturday was a big day for the RochesterDSM One Lap team. We had all sorts of little projects to work on and even as we check things off new items pop up and it seems like we only take baby steps closer to being ready.
I worked on fabbing up a new 4” air intake pipe to go along with the Art Hoffman FP3052 turbo. I also needed to add a v-band clamp to the exhaust system to get rid...

The RochesterDSM One Lap VR4 is going to be dyno testing and tuning at Street Tuned Motorsport. Emery, of STM, is a long time friend of the RochesterDSM club and has offered to lend a hand wringing every last drop of power out of our FP3052 turbo.

Last night we hand an all hands work session to get the FP3052 turbo installed. The turbo is on loan from Art Hoffman from NABR who wanted to make sure we had the right amount of sting in the One Lap VR4.
Currently on the car is a AGP L1R turbo which I love but really trades top end power for quick spool. Its great for autocrossing and track use on my Eclipse but the One Lap VR4...
Its been a few weeks since we got the car on the road and so far its been flawless. We something had to give and on the way home from work tonight all hell broke loose from the rear end. I put the hazards on and was preparing to pull over when the noise faded away. I was only a minute from home so I decided to try and make it.
I made it home and quickly hopped out to see what had...
The Rochester DSM One Lap Team is proud to announce that the staff at the East Rochester Public Library has gotten together to sponsor the One Lap of America Team as an official Race Day Sponsor.
Stephen’s mom, has worked at the East Rochester Public Library for almost 22 years. While bragging about your children is a natural occurrence with any parent, Sue has gotten everybody on the...
I had wanted to have the turbo installed by now but seeing how this was Easter weekend I didn't get much done. I did manage to work on the trailer a bit and I constructed a plywood box to house our tools and spares. The idea was to keep the car as empty as possible so when we get to the tracks we can just un-hook the trailer and go right out on track. We also needed a place to keep our stuff dry...
