All motor w/ same Power AND Cost as a Turbo Swap: Modding the front of the 4g64

Updated 09-17-2009 at 02:44 PM by dsm-onster

The 7bolt 4g64 is like a 7bolt 2g motor. This 4g64 cam out of a 1995 galant ls. The original driverside motor mount is more like a 2g mount than 1g mount. To mount this motor in a 1g chassis you must use the 1g timing belt idler & tensioner pulley base/assembly which includes the right boltpattern to use the 1g driverside motor mount.

But this piece has to be modified in two places...

All motor w/ same Power AND Cost as a Turbo Swap: Sexy poses of my n/a motor :)

Posted 09-09-2009 at 10:52 AM by dsm-onster

Some asked for more pics of the motor.

What finally pushed me to do it was that my brother came over and said you need to do a photo shoot with this motor AS is. OK, so I did it. I have no where else to put these but here. Otherwise they get deleted. I'm really antisipating what the car will DO. But I did take a break from my hx40 build and clean things up a bit . He likes the look...

Progress on 'All motor w/ same Power AND Cost as a Turbo Swap'

Here's a bit of progress. . .

First of all take a look at this thread on the elantra 1.6/1.8 head. As mentioned in the last thread, this head has a 43cc chamber. And I measured a 13mm width from chamber to chamber, vs. the stock 4g63 which has about 8mm width.

I bought the 10 TTY 7bolt 4g63 head bolts (fel-pro brand) for $35, plus $16 partsdinosaur.com head gasket....

Pulling the 4g63 for the All Motor build

Posted 09-03-2009 at 09:49 AM by dsm-onster

Here's me pulling the 9.0CR n/t 4g63 motor and tranny. Everything is unbuttoned and ready for the hoist and removing the mout bolts.

The engine bay is really 'riced up', but the car was free; can I complain?

The plan is simple:

All motor w/ same Power AND Cost as a Turbo Swap

Updated 09-03-2009 at 10:14 AM by dsm-onster

My first dsm was a forest green 1992 Eclipse witha n/a 4g63. I loved that car. It was a beater and I beat it. I always wondered if I had htat car now what I could do with it.

I could do a turbo swap to it, Likely I would have kept he stock pistons and just put the turbo ecu, injectors, and turbo into it. Along with the maf, fuel pump, knock sensor, upper IC pipe, bypassvalve and pipe,...

1Ga AWD auto to manual conversion. . .

Posted 02-26-2009 at 03:26 PM by dsm-onster
Updated 09-03-2009 at 07:35 AM by dsm-onster

So here it begins. I will be swapping neccesary drive train components and controls in my 1991 "specialty line" AWD automatic shell for AWD 5speed parts.

02/26/09: Removing the Automatic Parts from Your Shell
  1. Pull the shifter and console base.
  2. Drop the lower dash cover and lower steering column cover. Dont forget this screw.
  3. Trace the start safety cable from here to

I'm bored and I have a minigrinder. Hmmm. . . . Head porting!!!

Updated 09-03-2009 at 07:42 AM by dsm-onster

Waiting out the Nor-Easter here on the Eastern Shore, VA. Can't work. So I started porting my head. This head is a 1g head off an n/t block.

I read the nice little write up here about mild porting your 1g head. Great stuff. I can see how there would be a gain. The valve bowls are hardly conducive to smooth flow. There's imperfections, lips, and other stuff going on right where the port...

Don't port your 16g.

Here's a few pics of how I avoid hours of porting yet still eliminate that terrible "down-step" going from a 2g manifold to any 7cm^2 turbine housing (16g, 18g, 20g). It involves a piece of 2" galvanized pipe from Lowe's or home depot.

A 2g manifold has...

A Tale of Two All Wheel Drives

***EDIT: In the interest of keeping all my junk about this in actually one link, I'm jsut going to update this through "comments". I've inserted my other blogs related to this with the comments option, too.***

As my (mis)-fortune would have it, I have inherited a B-E-A-utiful 1991 AWD Eclipse shell. The pictures will speak for themselves. This was my brothers a/t car that he is tired...
