I've never thought I be so pissed
Three of my tires are leaking. My dad decided yesterday to drive my car out to this shop and have them fix it. This car was originally my dad's. It was in bad shape when he was ready to hand it to me. Headgasket blew, turbo was blown, oil was leaking, all that good stuff. He spent 5k to fix it up at the dealer. Way overpriced. I've been studying this site for 4 hours everyday and everynite. I told him I could fix it. But of course, being my father he had no faith in me.
So he was driving it yesterday. I was in the back, my stepmom in the front. I have never heard two people complain about my car the way it is now so much before. "Why the #### is it vibrating so much? What did you do to this car? Why is the engine so noisy? Did you change the engine oil? What oil you used? Blah blah blah blah blah." I told him of the mods I made and everything. He proceeds to shaft me saying, "I spent 5k to fix this car for you and now it's so noisy and everything."
I honestly was ready to book him down with the amount of knowledge I gained from working on my car and from this site. I was ready to take that shaft and shove it up his ass. Ok, this is the guy who's telling me what's good and what's bad with my car, when he himself couldn't do jack shit to it. I remember he tried to change the oil once. Couldn't do a damn thing and gave up. I changed out the oxygen sensor. I changed out the CAS when it went bad, I changed my own god damn ####ing oil, put in 10W-30, topped it off, and made sure everything was fitted right. How are you going to tell me what's good with the car and what isn't??
Seriously, real power isn't made by silencing the engine or by removing vibrations in the car. It's the complete opposite but he does not understand that and it pissed me off so much in the car that I couldn't say anything. I just really wanted to take Grace back into my hands. Hands that knows how to work her and knows what they're doing. He never even hit boost cause he was bitching about the noise when the turbo sucked the air in and then the blow off valve when it recirculated. #### man. What a dick.

Hes your dad. Hes not supposed to be your friend.
Youre young, thats the curse. I wouldnt trust a teen to touch my car either and would probably blame them if something was wrong too. But, its always good to vent, youll get over it. |

Your dad is just lookin out for your best interest, once your out of his house, it should change, out of site out of mind. With most all cars, the more you mod them, the less reliable the become, especially the dsms. My ol man used to give me all sorts of hell about my cars, you should just remind him that you could be out getting into all sorts of trouble, then show him how much money you saved doing the work yourself. I guess I was lucky my father is very mechanically inclined I grew up seeing engines rebuilt fairly often. Good Luck!!

I just figured my dad could like feel what I feel. She was great back then. And now she's even faster. I treat him more like a friend than a dad that's the thing. What kind of influence as a father is he when he offered me pot at my 16th and 18th birthday or who always tells me to go out and party and talks to me about girls and who's hot and who he do and how he wishes he could ditch his current wife and go after another chick? I really wished he was more mechanically inclined. He might actually understand what I'm doing but no instead he just buys a luxury SUV like everyone else. If it's broken, take it to the dealer and let them fix it. His mentality and mine are not on the same wave length. I can't wait to see what he'll say once I change out the exhaust. Geez he'll probably have to cover his ears or something.

Parents don't understand kids, Kids don't understand parents. Only dedicated DSM owners understand each other. Great to hear someone else hates it when they get shit from there parents too. I thought mine were the only ones that hated dsm's....

Haha yeah I suppose that's the way it is. I figured since my dad was a DSM owner, he could understand slightly but apparently not. He just wanted it for looks and not the potential power it could produce.
She's in good hands now though. Maybe I have to get her to 400fwhp, enter some drag competitions and take home some trophies for him to understand my passion. |

You think your dad should understand about your addiction to your dsm, wait til your married, lol. My wife still wonders how I spend countless hours on "that damn internet site"(dsmtuners). But it's amazing how much more I've learned about my car the I did in college where I studied automotive technology. Now it just seems like I wasted 2 years and over 5k. Keep up hope, and if you get a chance catch your father when he's red eyed and show him the site, how much information is here and a couple nicely built cars from some other users. Alot of parents, mine included get so hyped up about there every day jobs and routines they completely forget that one mans daily driver is anothers addiction!! Sounds like your headed down the right path though, C ya!

Dang. I had a good g/f then. That's why I still kinda want her back. She supported my addiction. She even had a 6 bolt lined up for me for Xmas. But then a pipe blew at her house and she couldn't get it cause she had to pay for repairs. But yeah, girls that do support your cars are out there. You just gotta look hard.

If your dad paid 5k to fix your car, stfu jr....pay for your own shit and then you have some say. He has every right to bitch at you.He paid to fix the car and doesnt want you learning mechanics on his investment.
Im guessing by your attitude towards money that that car was given to you....im sure your parents dont want you compromising reliabilty on a vehicle they paid for as transportation. You want to mod a car, save your money and buy one for that like everyone else.Show some respect to your father. |

5k to fix it when I would have gladly taken it and fixed it myself. Don't think for a second you know me. I really would rather have him give it to me and force me to fix it. At least I feel I would have earned it. Don't worry either. I plan on paying him the 5k and what the car is worth once I'm done with college and have a steady job. I will do the same for my own kid someday if he/she shares the same passion. And yes I do pay for my own shit. Everything I put into the car has been my own money from working. I've been through the regular DSM moods of it. Standing outside in the freezing rain from 11-5 in the morning waiting for AAA to come because the harmonic balancer went out the door is not fun. It's fine though cause I know that's how DSMs are. But your advice has been noted. Thanks for reading.

Your parents want you to have a safe, reliable mode of transportation. Don't hate them because of that. He spent $5k on it, not because he doesn't trust you, but because he wanted to make sure a professional did it. If it breaks, you can bring it back to them. If you had done it, and it had broken, you'd be screwed.
"Oh, I'll just fix it" and miss work? School? Not have a car for a month? If you're close enough to both of those that you don't need a car, or have a spare car, you shouldn't be pissed at anyone at any time. It's seriously an addiction. I've been taking my TREK to school through this whole ####ing winter because I don't have the $$ to put into the $100 bill slot on the side of my talon to get it to run. Do all DSMs operate on Benjamins, or just mine? Not giving you shit, there's always the flip side of the coin. Next time explain to them that the reason it shakes so bad is that you put in stiffer engine mounts to help the engine transmit power to the wheels. Less energy put into deflecting the mounts means more fuel economy and less potential damage to the drive train. True or not, they won't even know what to say : D P.S. I took my mom for a ride once and she is planning on stealing my talon whenever it finally runs. Of all the cars from the 90's, her favorites are 1G talons and turbo Saabs. Who knew? |

Well the reason why he took it some where is cause you are inexperianced and have no idea what you are doing...I understand you have read a lot and "know" a lot about the car, but you really have no experiance with it yet.Changing the cas, oil and other stuff is basic entry level stuff and shouldnt be in the same catagory as major engine problems.I wasnt saying you dont pay for your own aftermarket parts, Im saying you didnt pay for the car therefore youhave no right to bitch about modifying it, especially since your pops is paying for maintence as well....buy your own dsm, leave that one alone.Trust me, modded cars are not the best idea for dd...not saying it cant be done, but we all know that 99% of the time, modding a car greatly messes up the reliability.

This is why I'm glad we're poor, I buy my own shit and my dad likes cars. My motor spun a bearing so I told him I'm doing a 6bolt swap and he was like "Good idea!".
Not to be a dick, but if you didn't purchase it yourself, you really have no reason to be pissed off. He's just trying to make sure you have a nice reliable car. |

How old are you? By the way you're complaining and how you resent your dad it sounds like you're 14. He's your dad and you're lucky to have his car now. Unless you paid for that car all by yourself you shouldn't get pissed off at him. First buy your own car and then you can bitch and moan all you want.

Hahaha, yeah I gave my parents a ride in the car once too, right after I chose to vent my HKS SSQV with the MAF-T, thought they were going to shit on themselves
Anyway, it's all good man, eventually you'll breakthrough and show him that you know something about what you're doing, just stay persistent and keep pushing through it and everything will be good. |

Some parents are just jerks. This is a fact of life. The only thing you can do is try to educate your dad. If all he can do is complain when you try to reach out to him, then it is a matter of his attitude, and you may not be able to change that.
More power to you. |
