Dying My Interior Black
Posted 08-16-2010 at 05:26 AM by Blurred Talon
The one thing I can't stand about my interior of my Black car is the fact that it's grey. Black car, grey interior....it just looks odd.
Something I've heard a lot of talk about over the past while is SEM Paints, they make a line of flex coatings for changing the color of your interior. So I went out and bought some of the paint to try my hand at dying my interior.
I'll start off by saying that I prepped everything really well, washed with soap and water twice, cleaned with TSP (degreaser), washed with soap and water again and finally cleaned with SEM's prep spray.
Here's the result of the first piece I tested it on.

I then tried a few more pieces.

Pulled the rest of my interior out of the car.

Did more parts.

This weekend, I brought the dash home with me.

I'll update this entry as I do more. I'm looking at using RIT dye to dye my carpet black, then the only thing I'll need is my seats.
Head liner will be done in black suede.
I'm also powder coating all the dash brackets and will be replace the factory hardware with stainless steel hardware.

Looks good. I'd recommend buying a factory molded carpet in black rather than dying yours. That stuff is nasty. :PPosted 08-16-2010 at 11:30 AM by Notstock

I'm doing 5-6 layers of paint for part, I'm just about to open can number 3. I feel as I start to do the bigger pieces I will burn through paint faster.
As for the carpet, I'm torn. I've had friends buy 'factory' molded carpet and it's not even close to factory.
I've got a couple more pictures to upload in a little bit.Posted 08-16-2010 at 12:50 PM by Blurred Talon

I just finished painting my dash with this same paint as well. This paint is awesome and i tried a bunch of stuff to scratch/chip it and it did not wreck the black paint. Id say its definitely worth painting the dash with this stuff. I also did my doors, center console, and rear panels. And I figured that while I have my dash out, I'll put a little led alarm flasher. http://i35.tinypic.com/2evzzev.jpg(ignore that its hooked up to a battery in the picture) Why not give thieves another reason not to break in, for only $5.Posted 08-17-2010 at 10:17 AM by Kyle_T

I ordered mine from tooltopia.com. It was the cheapest side i could find and the shipping was the cheapest also. I was a little skeptical buying from there because they got a 3 out of 10 rating on resellerratings.com. But I got the paint probably 5 days after i ordered it and everything was fineQuote:
And the dash isnt that bad, just alot of things to take apart and a bunch of bolts and screws. And you also have to pull the steering wheel.Posted 08-17-2010 at 06:10 PM by Kyle_T

SEM is made for paint plastics and it's the best stuff on the market. I'm very happy with the out come.Quote:
It is time consuming and you don't want to rush it because that's when you make mistakes.Quote:
I've still got to track down black seat belts.
Check out SEM's website, SEM Products - SEM ProductsQuote:
The dash isn't too hard to take out, lots of hidden bolts. There's a write up in the tech articles on here, no pictures but tells you the location of the bolts.
The dash isn't too hard to remove imo. Pull the shifter out of the plate and rather then pulling the steering wheel, I simply dropped the steering column. It's a lot easier that way imo.Quote:I ordered mine from tooltopia.com. It was the cheapest side i could find and the shipping was the cheapest also. did you wrap your head liner yet? I did mine in a black suede and i have a few wrinkles around the sunroof control button, how do you get those out? Also if you havent done it yet theres a glue at jo-ann fabrics thats like 90 weight and is stupid strong, highly recommend!Posted 08-25-2010 at 01:00 PM by Gamovr

Have you ever seen the factory black panel? Which would be better, the Landau black or satin black. I want to match my factory black already in the car.Posted 08-25-2010 at 09:49 PM by VETTE_50_TH

No, the head liner is still in my car. Once the wrinkle is there, your kinda screwed. You need to pull the fabric tight while sticking it to the panel.Quote:did you wrap your head liner yet? My factory radio bezel was black and the Landau is an exact match.Posted 08-26-2010 at 05:14 AM by Blurred Talon

I'm doing the same thing. Actually. I just painted the bottom panels of the dash so it is two tone right now but I just used black plastic spray paint from home depot. You can get it anywhere though I suppose. As far as scratches I haven't seen one yet just let everything dry about 24 hrs bfore you put it back in. This is a much cheaper and easier solution but you still need to scrub everything down and using lacquer thinner acts a lot better than degreaser.Posted 08-26-2010 at 12:29 PM by vapor82

Finished wrapping both my door panel inserts and my cargo cover. There's a few tiny wrinkles but over all not too bad for my first try at doing this. Overall I'm happy with the out come and I can always do it again if it really starts to bug me.

I'll start working on dying the rest of the interior in a couple of weeks. Too busy to work on it right now.Posted 08-31-2010 at 11:22 AM by Blurred Talon

Question. So this "Dye" is in a spray form? Like a spray paint? But it isn't a paint at all? Have you attempted to try and damage anything, like a small peice somewhere to see how well it holds up? Also are you using it on the plastic pieces also, or just the vinyl stuff? I'm gonna see how this paint holds up this time, if it holds up I'll do the driver door panel and then the dash but if the stuff your talking about is real dye, then I'm gonna jump on that stuff. I mainly wanna do the vinyl portions of the door panels, the dash. The plastics in the back and hell even the leather if its a possibility.Posted 10-01-2010 at 01:53 PM by InfiniteGSX

Been a long time since I updated this. I found out clear coated is needed luckily SEM makes a low luster clear so I bought a couple cans of it.
I also made some videos about dying the interior and put them on YouTube.
YouTube - Dying My Talon's Interior Part 1
YouTube - Dying My Talon Interior Part 2
Some shots of the parts cleared.

Comparison between the flat/non-cleared dash and the cleared cluster bezel.

Got the dash clear coated today. I put the vents, tweeters and some of the buttons back in place. I'm 99% sure my Speedohealer is at the post office so I'll pick it up tomorrow and get the last bit of wiring done and put the dash harness back in.

I actually like the contrast the grey switches and dimmer give to the black dash. However I will eventually replace them with black ones.

Also my door panels are back together! I need to recover the inserts but that's easy to do. I ditched the Styrofoam and plastic box thingy on the back on the panels, they did nothing and were just dead weight.

I've got a bunch of other stuff I'm in the process of clear coating, I'll put pictures up when it's done.
Some of this stuff will be getting installed in the car in another week!!Posted 04-18-2011 at 06:46 PM by Blurred Talon
