Ok I have been struggling mating the tranny back up to the block. They are both out of the car. Motor assembled and on the hoist. the torque converter is bolted up to the flexplate (4bolts) and the TC is in the tranny housing and on the shaft. We put the TC in the tranny on the shaft and pushed it back, then moved the motor to the tranny. I can get the top bolt and the side bolt in, but on the one side where the starter is, that side for some reason does not want to get together. I have tried loosing at bolt, keep them a bit tight, tightening them all thinking it should pull them together, C clamp, Ratchet tie down. All no luck. Its just the one side that will not come together.

What am I doing wrong? Suggestions?

Would it be easier if I tightened down the bolts I can, then drop the block and tranny in. Tighten down the engine and then from the side of the car push on tranny, with a jack underneath the tranny?

I spend about 4-8 hours just trying to get them together. Its a pain in the A**

You need to remove the tc from the flexplate and spline it into the tranny. Now, mate the tranny to the block and then bolt the tc to the flexplate from underneath where the inspection cover goes. Failure to spline the tc in properly will result in a failed pump and a junk tranny.

Thats how we did it.

I took the TC and put it on the shaft on the tranny. Slid it all the way back. Then we moved the motor over to the tranny and put the 4 bolts that go through the flexplate in the TC in. Now I can put all the top bolts in and the exhaust manifold side lower bolt, but the other side is one causing the issue. Here is pic.

Notice the TC is pushed back and bolted up.

Sorry, but why are you installing tranny issues? I'd be UNinstalling them myself. ;)

That said, and having worked on only one auto trans and having this problem, I'd say you probably aren't seating the torque converter fully. Try twising the smallest shaft on the transmission end just a tiny bit so the splines turn just a hair more and then try again. I'd almost bet cash money that this is your problem and it will sit a little deeper in.

yea, i think the TC needs to be back further. So I'm going to remove the bolts and do it all over again. Sucks. So close to being dropped back in the car.

Hopefully I'm not installing tranny issues or any other kind of issues :) !!!!

your TC is not all the way in otherwise the tranny would go on no prob. Do not bolt the TC to the flexplate till after you have sucsefully mated the tanny to the engine. If you do not do this wright then you will damage the pump and the tranny will be Junk as stated above. It is very easy to not have the TC seated in the pump drive you have to spin it and you should feel it drop 3 times.
