AEM EMS Tuning by Sean Mcelderry of TorqueFreaks Inc.

This is my review of the Tuning Services offered by Sean McElderry of TorqueFreaks Inc. - http://www.torquefreaks.com

He tuned the AEM EMS on my 92 awd Laser with a Forced Performance FP-3052.

You can see all the modifications to my car on my web page.

The problem I faced in using the EMS is this; I wanted my car to run as close to perfect as possible, but I don’t have the knowledge needed to use the EMS to it’s full potential. I read all the manuals, and ALL the posts in the EMS forum. One big problem I have is that I forget half of what I read! ~rolling eyes~ Anyway, working full time, going to college, and taking care of my family, I couldn’t get my car to run the way I wanted to with what little knowledge and no real experience that I had with the EMS. On the verge of giving up hope that my car would ever run right, I contacted Sean about tuning my car. Sean flies all over the country and the world offering his tuning expertise. He has tuned Hondas making 200 horsepower and Supras making well over a 1,000 horsepower, along with many many other cars. His shop and his four techs also tune other stand alone fuel management systems, offers dyno services, and can do just about anything you need done to your car. After working with Sean, I can say its a shame they don’t have a shop in every state!

While this review is about the service Sean performed for me, I also want to comment on his personality. I felt like I was bringing him my piece of crap car held together with bubblegum and tape. I was self conscious about the rough state of my wiring, and ten other things I could have had in better shape. But, Sean was a pleasure work with, not condescending in any way. He answered every question I had, no matter how dumb I felt they were, with patience and in terms that I could understand. When I asked how he got started in the business and other questions that didn’t relate to the car or the EMS, he was personable and friendly, not giving a "Mind your own business" attitude. I doubt anyone will have a hard time getting along with this guy.

So what happened? Well, my car idled fairly well and was drivable at cruising rpms before I went to get it tuned. But, under load it ran like #@*$. It was depressing. Even with the Wideband 02 feedback and automapping, I couldn’t seem to get things right. Sean let me know that he was flying out to Birmingham Alabama to tune Honda S2000 for a few days. He offered to stay on another day if I wanted to drive out and have him tune my car. So, I reserved Monday November 17th to work with him. I arrived in Birmingham the evening of November 16th and we started on the car right away. After ironing out a few issues, we were ready to tune. At times, Sean would sit in the drivers seat with the laptop in front of him, controlling the throttle, breaking, and shifting, while I steered and kept him alert to any traffic. We would pull over and then he would tune while I popped the hood and checked my oil, looked for leaks, etc. After some drivability tuning, he really started to take the car full throttle. I also discovered how loud an external wastegate dump is, and that I loved it! Even in the passenger’s seat I was hooting an and hollering for sheer joy. It was MY CAR making this power! We did pulls from 10 psi to over 20psi. He decided to put the boost at a conservative 14 psi since it gets quite hot in the Memphis summers.

I could not believe how well the car ran when he was done. It idles and drives better than it EVER did on the stock ECU. I never thought I would say this, but the EMS is ALL THAT, ---------------IF-------------- you put it in the hands of someone who really knows what they are doing. Sean McElderry of torquefreaks.com is one of those guys who really knows. He is the Doctor, and the EMS is his scalpel.

Cliff Notes:

After my own effort, I was beginning to believe the EMS was a piece of junk. But, Sean McElderry of Torquefreaks tuned the AEM EMS on my car to make it sing. The car has never run better, even on the stock ECU. Given, you can learn to tune the EMS on your own, but if you are very limited on time to learn how to do so, getting Sean to tune your car will save you A LOT of stress and frustration. He also provides technical support by phone and email after he has tuned your car. I can ask him all the "dumb" questions I have and get reliable answers. Such support will help you learn how do a lot of things for yourself. My car is now faster than I ever thought it would be. I would recommend Torquefreaks' tuning services to anyone, and I plan on working with them in the future for some "power" tuning.
