Can't get deck to work

When I bought my car it had an aftermarket deck in it but it didn't work, It came with the stock one also but when I plug that in it doesn't work either. They both get power because they will eject a disc but the screens won't come on. The whole harness is a mess and there is a connector for both decks on it.What should I do? I don't know much about systems so how much do you think it would cost to take it to a shop and just have them get the deck working? And where do the door speakers plug into?

Wow, that's a mess. So they both power on, are able to eject a cd, but the screen doesn't come on? Do yo know what kind of system your car came stock with? Infinity?

A lot of head units won't light up or show screens unless your constant power is hooked uo. Constant is usually orange or yellow. reconnect that broken yellow wire you have in photo 1 and see what happens. Also check all the lines for breaks/cuts. Double Check your ground(black) as some will eject cd's but not come on with a bad ground. With that giant mess in your pictures I would just disconnect everything and start from scratch. Also on most cars (not sure about these) the headunit has stamping or stickers to say what color wires do what.

It came with the infinity, and if the yellow wire is connected it still does nothing.

Did they splice into the factory harness or is there an adapter plugged into the factory harness?

I would unsplice the aftermarket plug and reconnect the stock plug to the stock harness (soldering the connections). I would then buy a harness adapter and wire that up to the harness that plugs into the back of the radio. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, I'd take it to an audio shop and have them clean up the mess.

Ok thanks, I'm not to good at systems so the shop will probly be the best option. How much do you think they would charge?

Hopefully it wouldn't take them more than an hour or two to do it. With parts, maybe $75 or $100? I really don't know as it differs from shop to shop in how much they know, how fast they work, how much they charge, etc. You can always go in, explain the situation, and ask for an estimate. They should be able to give you that on the spot.

I was an installer at best buy for a couple years, if you went to them you'd be looking at about $40-$50 in parts (providing they still stock them - $20 for the harness that has been cut off, $20 for the into-car harness and $5 in materials) and I'd say a half hour of labor. If I remember correctly the labor rate was $15 per 15 min of labor. I'd imagine most places would be about the same. If you don't really have any experience with electronics it may be a huge headache trying to do it yourself. They can also bench test your unit to make sure it functions correctly before anything to make sure. Nothing worse than having your own stuff installed only to be told that its faulty. I had to do that a couple times to people and I didn't feel good about it at all.

the small harness there is for the deck, and what is the bigger harness for? is that for the stock deck did he run them in parallel so he can switch from stock to aftermarket?

as someone said, some decks need constant (yellow) to be connected also for it to work properly.

power, constant, and ground is all i hook up to make sure a deck turns on. if an aftermarket deck does not turn on after connecting those 3 wires, and those 3 wires alone. you have to investigate further.

that looks a cake walk for me, if you were close by, id redo the entire thing for you for $10, with or without the harness.

you don't need to take it anywhere if you just take the time to get the wiring diagram and redo it.

that plug with the yellow wire cut off looks like it belongs to a clarion deck ,but if you want to see if the deck works just cut the red also and the black .take the red and yellow from that plug, put them together and hook it to 12v and just ground the black ,you should get power .i.e on alot of stero,s I have fixed or installed they have a source button on them which has to be pressed before it will power up .

And even if I did know what colors did what The colors on my aftermarket deck harness wouldn't be the same right?

And where do the door speakers plug into on the door?

the colors of wires on aftermarket decks are usually the same, the car wiring though varies, check the wiring diagrams.

door speakers connect to the door. the wires hsould be there

Just follow that diagram, I think they have the years a little off - the 2nd picture looks like any 2g I've worked on. The first picture looks like 1g's. Anyway go by the 2nd picture. Use crimp caps or solder and tape up your connections with electrical tape if you don't want any trouble down the road.

It should be pretty straight forward, make sure you leave yourself enough slack on the wires so you can pull the cd player out later if you need to without ripping all the wires out.

Also you'll notice theres no ground listed on the diagram so that just means ground it to a chassis bolt. There should be one available somewhere in close proximity.

So I just put in a new passenger door harness and noticed this

so is that where I plug in my door speakers? does it matter which one is positive or negative? Then i took off my driver side door panel and saw the previous owner cut that connecter so there is just two wires, can I just crimp the wire from the speaker to the cut wires? Here is a pic of the cut one
