Nice Paint
I'm impressed. My only concern with this method is durability. Any past experience to say this is a worthwile investment of your considerable time?

Dude - looks sweet! I do like the red/black combo better than I thought. Can't wait to catch it live and in person again...looked good before when you had the red done but I dig the black combo now.
Guys, I've seen it in person and can vouch for $50-100 in supplies (plus time of course) that its worth it versus >$1,000....especially for a project car.

Thanks Ray,
I have no past experience at all, this is really my first stab at any type of body work/painting. So even tho the results are no where near what I would expect from a professional, they are perfect for a project car. The car's not goign to be on the road any time too soon, but when it does I'll be sure to post up some pics after Its been driven for a while with any durability results.
We shall see after I'm done and how good it looks/lasts to determine if its worth the time/effort. I would say, not including the body work or primer, just counting the red and black paint...I would say I have close to 20 hours in the garage(6 coats of each color, 1-2 hours each coat pending. the first coat takes a while and then the coats that I wet-sanded took a while) I'll let you know.

I painted my car using this method in March 2007. So far the only problem that I had was caused by a huge bird dropping on the black roof that I didn't clean for about a week. When I washed it off a pea size piece of the paint came off. This happened before I buffed & waxed the roof. Touch up was a snap. Since then the roof has been waxed & the birds have still been busy(I park under power lines).

I think I'm gonna paint the car white, I think I remember seeing glossy white and semi glossy. I just want to get as close to stock white as possible. Which should I get?

That's nuts, makes me want to go out and go get all the supplies right now. Awaiting the final pictures to see the finished product, as so many of us are! Hurry up!! lol. The GS-T is getting a little faded and starting to get sun spots, it's time for a new paint job, and if I can do this then that'll save me a bunch of money, keep us updated and good luck on your project!!

Wow this seems to really be catching on, and as soon as i see the final pics, i might go out and do this myself. I mean, if any of you have looked at my POS spray can job [thanks to the problem with dsm's clear coat peeling] im really in need of paint. And 50-60$$ compared to a grand or two. Man that gives me goose bumps.
Update.
I cant wait to see this.

I really hope your guys are doing this to cars with maginal paint to begin with... rustolem will work, but its soft, it will mar easilt and has nowhere near the durability as a conventional automotive finish.. honestly you could go to your local autoparts store ask for a single stage urethane and roll it on and have much better results with less work, for only about twice the cost. not to mention it will actually last. theres a reason cars arn't painted with enamel anymore..

I have tried this method on a spare fender and i have had no problems with the durability of the paint. although the regular Rustoleum paint was soft for a couple days it still dried hard as a rock, i found that if u use Rustoleum "professional" it turns out better and actually dries a lot quicker and harder than the regular stuff
Rustoleum "Professional" > Rustoleum
...I actually think that this was mentioned earlier in the thread

I went out and got supplies today. Cost me $50.34. I began my body work and sanded down the whole car. Waiting for body filler to dry so I can start painting. I decided on gloss white for the color.

Get RustOleum Professional, u will use more than 1 quart if u want to cover the whole car (especially a van), i would buy the gallon and experiment a little till u get it right
Items needed:
RustOleum Professional paint
a bunch of 4-6in foam rollers
sand paper 600-1500 grit
a gallon of mineral spirits
DO NOT SHAKE THE PAINT! use the stirring sticks
u can get this at Home Depot or Lowe's, they even have rustoleum at Wal-mart
