Thanks for the thread! I've seen this method before, and read through a bit of the huge threads. But it's great to see pictures of the progress; the more the better! I'm especially interested in seeing how it progresses from coat to coat, and also how it compares (subjectively) to factory/new paint. I'm not expecting a really deep clearcoat/pearl/metallic type paint. But what is realistic to expect from this?

This is exciting, as paint is usually so out of reach for weekend garage-types like me.

The paint on my talon is shot right now too. Finally moved out and have my own garage now I'll be trying this over the winter to see how it works out as well!

I was hoping for better pics of the 5th coat. Looks like in the garage is too dark, mind opening the door for better pics?

Hey 420 this might not affect you since your painting the whole car but I can't seen to get mine to not look hazy. I wet sanded 600,800,1000,1500 and the used turttle wax polishing compond, 3M fine polishing compond and then waxed all with a machine buffer. The black paint is a real pain in the ass. The only way it looks glossy is after I paint it, but then its orange peel texture.

EclipseTrbo420A, Not to be a stickler... but what in the hell do you plan on doing about the door jambs? the area's behind the tail lights? All the other possible visible spots of white like where the antenna is... I mean, all this work your doing... you should get those area's done with something before you get to that shiny coat you've been working so hard on... and have to mask off all your lovely work.

I probably would have started out like you did... but would have used some Brake cleaner in the area's you couldn't paint ... Work my best on getting those area's able to take paint, and get some good rattle cans in that area... before touching the body.

I'm seriously thinking of building a sand blasting kit that I can use to sand area's like that down, perfectly... Cause I don't know about you... hand sanding things like that, sucks! I end up getting lazy and half assing the rest of it, or not finishing it.

Oh yeah, btw... The car looks great! Besides those area's. How much money have you spent total to get that look? Cause Were going to paint our 1st Gen GSX the exact same way you are. Black...

He already posted that he plans on taking a rattle can to those areas before the final sanding/buff job.

Sorry about those darker pics. But I already wetsanded the 6th coat today and installed the rear bumper and wired the reverse lights.

Tomorrow Everything gets coat 7, and thats when Ill start applying the nook areas with the spray. So then Once its all black I will install everything and then after that everything will get the once over by me and I will then fix/work on everything I think looks bad or not as good as it could. Im kind of excited.

As for that haze...I think I know what you mean its almost like the black has smoke in it in certain lights....I cant explain it, but I dont think it will be a match to the stock X13 ( i think ) the dsms come with. Thats why I had to paint roof over black as well.

I was looking at that regal red in the rustoleum color, but i just want to finish this job completly before I do anything. ALSO with out wet sanding, if I apply slowly and evenly with the roller the paint doesnt look half bad as it sits alone. Anyways Ill get the rest up tomorrow.

Ill see what I can do for all that stuff and the windows are just an extension of the trim piece it runs all the way to the mirrors.

Mirrors? That metal/Rubber piece that usually dies on our cars and ends up chrome? Yeah, pictures of this would help me out sooooooooooooo much. I've taken that peice off of my ECLIPSE, was going to Krylon it since it was mostly chrome now from loosing the rubber stuff, But If thats a piece that can be removed, I'd love to know... I was told that it was actual sheet metal. Part of the body.

We all are, suposedly he has to paint the white peices with spray... wet sand it with a finer grit paper, and then clear it.
