I'm looking into purchasing a full 3" exhaust in the near future, and I was looking at the Apex N1 catback exhaust. Unfortunately, it's not available for 1G FWD DSMs, so I'm going to call a local shop and ask how much it'd cost to have them mandrel bend a pipe for me.

So I need a good muffler. I don't want one that's loud, because two neighbor kids have obnoxiously loud mufflers (and no other mods, hah), and it just annoys the hell out of me. I want my car to be sort of a sleeper, so that's another reason why I want it quiet. I know you can put a silencer in, but don't they reduce the airflow?

Finally, I have questions on specific parts:
Mandrel bent catback (minus muffler): How much should I expect to pay?
Quiet, high flow muffler: Reccomendations and prices?
Cat Converter: Reccomendations?
Downpipe: Reccomendations?

I think that's all for now :D

Thanks in advance for any help.

i have a hayame muffler and love it. it is deep and real resonant sounding, but not at all loud. you really don't have to worry about being obnoxiously loud like your neighbors... you know that hair dryer you have coming off your exhaust manifold? that quiets things down just a bit ;) it will be louder, but i don't think it's possible to be obnixiously loud!

get a catco cat. a 3" will run you around 90 bucks.

mandrel bent 3" catback piping should run between 150 and 200 bucks for a quality job. don't go cheap and get press bent. it sucks. it's worth the extra money.

downpipe... go to www.buschurracing.com and order a downpipe from them. or rnrracing has good stuff, but it takes a while to get it to you.

what other mods do you have, or plan to get? you could probably go with a 2.5" downpipe, 3" cat, and 3" catback and that would be plenty for you. buschur racing says that until you are into the 11's, a 2.5" DP is sufficient. also, with a 3" downpipe, be prepared for massive boost creep! you will probably get a little boost creep with 2.5" dp, but nothing like a 3" will be. if you go with a 3" DP, get one of the downpipes that eliminates the o2 housing. that should also eliminate most boost creep, if not all.

anything else? :)

Wow, great. Thanks for the answers.

I have a lot of plans for my car, but it's going to take quite a while. Right now, I'm just getting a better exhaust so I can get an MBC and run higher levels of boost. I figured I would just go all out and get a full exhaust so I wouldn't have to spend the money to replace it later. Is that a bad idea?

depending on what you are shooting for in the long run, a full 3" might be overkill. a 16g is enough turbo for 95% of the dsm'ers out there. with a 16g a 2.5" downpipe is sufficient. if you plan o bigger, with a 20g, fp green, or whatever, then you will be able to take advantage of the 3" downpipe. a 2.5" dp, 3" cat/testpipe, and 3" catback is enough for low 12's or high 11's. aside from the other thousands of dollars youwill spend on fuel, tuning, and all the other toys to maximize the setup, that would be plenty for you. i've done a LOT of research on the subject, and that's the info i pulled out of it. go to http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17541&highlight=overkill there's a lot of useful information in that thread.

you have the exact same year/car as i do :) one question... do you have a body kit on your car? mine came with some sort of body kit, i think, from the factory, but i'm not sure.

Thanks a lot :D

No, my car doesn't have any type of kit on it. The sides are a lot smoother, but it also seems higher up. In addition, the front and back have something different on them, and mine doesn't have a wing.

Now, I'm thinking I'll just get a 2.5" downpipe, but should I have the rest of the exhaust 3"?

you can't? i did a search in google, and these are the top 2 sites that matched hayame, if i hadn't closed the window i'm sure there would be more ;) i think i have a type 7, but not really sure. it came on the car. mine doesn't really look like any of the ones listed... they are kinda pricey, but sound good. supposedly they give about a 5-7 hp increase on a dyno, now i am not sure if "only" a muffler can do that, but they say it can. http://www.lightningmotorsports.com/hayame_dyno.htm
