2g 420a to 1g 4g63

Alright, I’ve read all the forums for engine swaps and they never actually tell you if its worth it or not. But here me out first.

I bought a 96 Eagle Talon ESi for 1200 (good deal- had some front damage but fixed it, except for radiator support) now I realize that I should have bought a TSI but cannot locate one close enough to me for around 8 grand. Anyway, some friends and me are thinking of doing the engine swap. 420a to a 1st Gen 4g63 (Herd the 1g motor is quicker then 2nd) Now people tell me it would be expensive for the engine and the parts but my buddy donated me a 93 Laser Turbo (Complete Car) So most the parts I can steal from that. Linkage / ECU (If Needed) / Harness / What Ever else. I looked at http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/1g2g.asp On how they did it. I also have a custom fabricator for exhaust and that shit. My dad says that he can mount the engine in (motor mounts / Clearance / ect...)

I don’t know if im leaving anything else, but i figure if i just drop the 1g 4g63 engine in there and swap computer, and harness i should be in good shape. I know I could pull it off if this is just about all I need in doing it. But I want to make 100% sure this is all I need. Plus my 420a has 107k on it.

Good luck. If you accomplish it you would be one of 2 people on this board to do it, and the 1st ones car caught on fire. Why do all the custom fabrication to have stock hp #'s. Build the one you have got

Well, Because its going to cost alot of money to build up a n/t motor. And if I have a car already then why not. I understand what your saying though. I might just do that, but if This is all I need then I might just attempt it. I posted this to see if some one else may know if id need anything else.

For the love of god don't do it. Think about this, for all the money you are spending to run a stock time on a 4g63, you can have a 2.4 420A with forged internals and a turbo kit for about the same amount of money.

i dont know why is everybody saying that 96 Eagle Talon N/T have the same HP as a 93 Laser Turbo.
sakrafice, if i had all of that under my hands, and had alot of free time, i would do it but thats just me.
but to answer your Q. i realy dont know what else you would need.

No one is saying he will have the same hp as the n/t engine with the turbo engine in it. What we are saying is that he is going to spend all this time and money fabricating and engine bay to fit a 1g engine and have 1g turbo engine specs, which i believe the 1g hp specs are 195bhp?

well, i dont know how different is the engine bay, but he said that his dad can mount the engine. so i dont think he will get charged $$$ for that.
also, to get different engine like 2.4 420A he needs money, when he already have 4g63t for free.
and to buld his stock engine he also need some $$$.
but then againg it was my opinion and i would do that if that would cost me like $200. and i would spend time to do that, if i had nothing else to do. but like i said, its just me everybody is different. and 55hp for 200 bucks is not bad for me, plus all the future potencial

Its not just the motor mounts that need to be customed, the transmission is on the oposite side of the car if i remember correctly. If he can do everything for under $200 that is awesome. I am sure that with the thousands of members on this site that he is not the only one with a donor car and ability to do fabrication. All I am saying is that with all that time put into the car just to have be at factory spec is kinda lame. But anyway good luck to him

I've said it before and I'll say it again IMO it's not worth it. There are a lot of things you will face that you are not prepared for but I will highlight 1. I think the ECU will be a problem unless you plan to use all the guages and systems from the 1g. Otherwise you will have a lot of wireing to do. I could be wrong on this though. Now for the rest of the work. Does your dad do mechanic work for a living or is he a weekend welder? I ask because this is a major undertaking. Also with the 93laser turbo engine, how many miles does it have? All motors go eventually how soon will this one from 93 when you try to get 350-400 HP on it. My point is either way you are prolly looking at a rebuild soon. You can try this but I have only heard of 2 sucessful attempts. One guy did it himself and his car later cought on fire after not working properly for a time. The second was more recent and says it cost him about 3 grand and the work was done by a shop. I believe it was done because there are pics but it is still in it's early age so who knows???? One other guy tried and ended up having to cut the frame of the rs and try to weld on the entire front clip of the gst. I don't even know if he ever was able to get it back together at all. But I still say there is no way it's worth it in this case. Good luck if you try though.

Your right, it is pointless to do all that for stock hp .... however yes my dad is a full time mechanic. He builds racecars. So that stock 4g63 would get rebuilt before I attempted it. Porting & Polishing, Boring the works. But I see your point it would be a mess, I only thought about doing it for the fact that they make more aftermarket parts for the 4g63 then the 420a. Another thing is I have a turbo motor sitting around along with the car it came out of. Any way though I have been talking to my dad about it and will probably just not do it and build up a 420a, not the 2.4 (unless you have some ideas about that engine) Think that’s out of a Stratus or something; Not sure though. And yes i knew the tranny is located on the passenger side for the 4g63 but the good thing is, its the same car.... they have the brackets for the mounts to hold tranny on passenger side.. (for the 2g TSI) Kind of smart on there part... Why make 2 different designs when you could just switch it up a bit, so the tranny would be something simple. Along with getting engine to clear. Only thing I wasn’t sure about is wiring. Any way though, thanks for the information. I’m probably just going to build up the 420a 2.0 n/t motor. That being said, anyone out there selling a turbo kit.
