Is my engine turbo ready?

My friend said my engine maybe ready to install turbo on already. But how do I know that? I have a 1999 eclipse gs... I dont know how to read engines, but it said DOHC 1.6 valve 2.0 or something like that on it. Will it be able to handle turbos?

search under 420 engine in this forum and you'll find some nice threads about turbocharging your engine. there are turbo kits available for your car, just spend some time reading and learning about it.

If by 'turbo ready' you mean it can be turbocharged... then the answer is yes, this engine is good enough to hold a turbo kit and some good amount of boost levels, there's also quite some turbo kits available to make your install easy, strong, efficient, and proven to work just fine on your car. Yet your motor is not as strong as a motor who already come turbo'ed because of the internal componets.
Now with all do respect, the way you formulate your question kinda sounds like your not sure about doing this, or have much knowledge about it, if you think in a near future turbo you car, it'll be way better if you do alot of extensive research about it, even if you're going to pay some shop to do it, you must know what are they doing to your car, and how can you keep it reliable and runing strong. hell, you might find it easy enough to install it your self (wich is not that hard) and save you some bucks.

hey man,

your engine can be turboed. Its not exactly the strongest engine in the world....but it can handle a little boost. You can turbo it and push about 7lbs of boost daily. The engine is proven to handle 10lbs of boost and maybe even 11 if you dare to try. You can look at a turbo kit for your car at www.overboost.com or www.hahnracecraft.com

if you want to push more boost then that then you will need to buy a bottom end kit. You can find that at www.howellautomotive.com, you will want to get the low compression pistons....8:6:1 i believe. If you build up your bottom end, and get some supporting mods, like bigger injectors, air/fuel controller, bigger fuel pump, 3" exhaust, then the amount of boost you run depends on how much further you think you can push the car. With this setup you could easily run 15lbs of boost daily and it could probably accept 20lbs of boost too. Its really up to you tho. If you turbo your car expect little things to break a lot, and you must keep track of all activity in your car. For this you would need a boost gauge, air/fuel gauge, oil temp guage...blah blah the list goes on.

When it all comes together its very very expensive to turbo the 420a motor. But in the long run its worth it if you pull up to a GST/GSX with your black door handles, and they think its a RS model, and you smoke them...just nothing better then that..haha as for me i sold my nt and bought a first generation eclipse turbo AWD

Hahn racecraft, Star Motorsports, and Motorfool... all sell turbo kits for the 2gen non turbo..... Stop by at the site and you can see a shit load of turbod RS, ESI, GS.....

Like others have mentioned already our cars are "Turbo Ready" I wouldn't recomend pushing the boost over 10, personally i would keep it at 8 (just in case )

Our engine code is 420A you might be new to this and i dont mean to be rude but DUDE! , it is a DOHC 2.0 Liter 16 valve (not 1.6), 4 vavles per cylinder, its like that for all cars ie mustang gt v-6 is 24 valve, 4 times 6 , good luck with everythin! and let me kno how it turns out.

Oh before u start moddin ure car (even if it isn't addin a turbo) do a tune-up to the car so u kno ure good to go from the start.

As for the turbo, i forgot to mension u should prolly do the compression test & the leak test. I've never done it but im goin to find out n ill let u kno, later

wander what it would do if you turboed a 420a with fried piston rings or blown head gasket. hahaha. I say be ballzy and redo it build it to 10.5:1 compression then throw a turbo on it :laugh: yes i know what im talking about. it will either go KABOOM or if you can find some good head bolts and probley use a forged crank it might work. dunno, but i would love to see it done.
