Wheel lock key broke, broken, lost, etc. [Merged 8-6] stud nut lug key

I had this happen, I was sold my car with out a key.

1-4 sockets, I dont remember which size but I think they were standard.
We pounded them on with a mini sledge hammer then removed.

Done.

Its not hard, they are lust odd nuts. Nothing a hammer cant take care of.

this happened to me. i took a grinder and got a nice wedge in the lug nut. then i was able to get the thing off the cheap way. if your wheels dont allow for this type of action, you should go with the welding idea.

A tire monkey will be able to tell you what locks they are with a glance, and they'll have the tool to yank them without a key. It's okay to drive with 4 lug nuts. Get McGard or Gorillas to replace them.

I was going to change the brake pads on my gf's integra the other day and i realized that it had locking lugs and the key for the lug wrench is nowhere to be found. Is there any special trick that can get locking lugs off? I've heard of welding a normal lug to the locking lug to take it off, but I'd rather not go through all that. Any help is appreciated.

A few sockets with internal teeth are made for this, some people just hammmer on a tight socket, you can chase it off with a punch tip in a pneumatic hammer, Vise-Grips, chisel.....

A friend I have had the same problem with his wheels, he simply took it took it to the dealer to see if they had the right key for them which they didn't, and so he had them blown off by some pressurized air thing.

use a torx Lug with teeth on the inside, hammer it on and try it out,or just weld somethin on

OR just go to the Dealer<-------i recommend doing this first...

Honestly your best bet would be to call around to a place that both sells and services wheels. I'm sure they have run across the same problem before. Judging by those pictures, it's going to be a very nasty job for who ever does it. At least if you take it to a repair shop and they claim they can get them off, they then are somewhat responsible for getting them off. But be aware... any smart repair shop will tell you up from that they make no guarantee as to the condition of the wheels or the hub after the two are seperated. Good luck.

I would take it to Les Schwab if there is one near you. I use to work there and we would get locking lug nuts off all the time for people that lost their key to them. It looks like they messed up yours pretty bad but they might still be able to get them off. Put some more lug nuts on it before you drive it anywhere (it looked like it only had two on it) we wouldn't want them coming off while you were driving it to get fixed.

Yes you must put nuts back on the missing studs.

You don't have the key? If they did not destroy the lug nut portion you may be able to get the number and call around to see who has the key. Those keyed nuts are pretty hard and will ruin many a chisel trying to get them loose. Plus they would have made a lot of noise banging away. You could try installing the other nuts finger tight, spraying with WD-40 and driving in figure 8's in a parking lot this may loosen them to the point you can coax the out with a chisel working around the inside edge so you don't slip and nick the rim.

Should all that fail your only option is to drill them out along with the stud which will of course need to be replaced. This will not be pleasant, but before you get to wailing with hammer follow Doug99's advice and see if anyone can help.

You are about 5 miles as the crow flies from me but I'm leaving for SF to pick up V45 motorcycle and won't be back until Sun.

Just a quickie.

Here is another maybe... remove the axle and take it out or gain access to the back of the stud and drill/grind the head off so you can drive it out from the back side. You didn't mention if you have the KEY, sometimes when the nut is damaged you can drive the key on with a hammer and then use the socket breaker bar to loosen. You must make sure you index the key correctly.

In removing axles/hubs the problem will be the caliper assby clearing the inside rim.

Anyone help him more, I gotta go??

I have to get my front wheels off the car. I dont have the tool to get the lug nuts off so i went to the auto parts store to see if they had it. I have the kinda lugs that are hollow not the ones that have to tool go over top of them. The auto parts store said that i would have to get a custom tool made to get those lugs off cause those are custum nuts and that they only make the kind of tool that fits over top the lug nut. I didnt argue but this sounded way wrong to me, especially since that last time i messed with my lug nuts my friends tool set that came in his 94 accord had the lug nut tool that fit in them perfectly and his lugs are the same as mine. Is that just a huge coincidence or is the auto parts store dumb? anyway where do i get the tool to get my lugs off??? im at a hault on my repair work till i get that tool..........:|

There is no way a socket is going over these, LOL. What should i do? I have the lug nut socket thingy but like i said it wont work with my wheels/lug nuts, is there an adaptor?. So the tool that goes inside the lug nut is called a torque bit? is that what i should look for? I would love to have something that would work with my torque wrench. God it sucks being newbie sometimes.

I never got a key adaptor thing, i didnt get alot of the tools with the car, that kinda sucks for me. I didnt know any better when i first paid for it. Should i go to the local tire shop and see if they can give me something to get them off? I cant really drive the car there, to much stuff needs replaced(seals and stuff), thats what im working on.:|

hmm, it does look like i am missing the key things. It must be a crapy kind of security lug cause that bar my friend had fit right in them and let me work with em. I guess ill just borrow that from him or try and get sumthing that will fit in them so i can work with them.
