lightening ideas

So what is everyone doing out there to lighten their cars? I have the basic no interior from the front seats back but I'm looking into tearing out the bumper mounts, just can't figure out how to have the bumper cover still held on good. Anyone ever do that or have any other lightening mods or ideas? chris

make your car into a convertable...haha good way to drop some pounds.....sure your car will be flexible but think of the weight savings

bad idea. you will end up gaining weight from all the supports that you will put into it

I don't know if trying to lighten DSMs is practical or not. They have pretty beefy frames -worse on the 2G- and I see some people taking rather extreme measures: AC, power steering, CF hoods, ABS, bumper supports, seats, spare.... overall, I'd doubt they remove 400 pounds after all this. I don't know if it's worth what it costs in daily driving.

yeah, your probably right defieant, but I'm allready down to 2400 exactly which is a rather big drop in weight. No power steering or air conditioning ( helps with motor swaps too, and I live in washington) no spare tire, just carpet in the back, yeah, I was more looking for a way to take the bumpers out. Probably impossible without some extreme fabrication. thanks for your ideas though. Chris

Im down just to my front seats. No rear seats, no rear carpet, no spare, no plastic in back. And no door panels or head line. It feels like im driving a race car or rally car. But its cool tho

ha ha, the headliner weighs like three ounces, might as well take a crap before you race. And jeez, no door panels, that is pretty cool though, the ladies must like your car about as much as they like mine. anyone know anything about taking out the bumper mounts? I don't know if the bumper would hang too much, I've looked at it a few time and it seems like it would just sag alot. chris

The headliner is out b.c my sunroof started leaking and it made it all droopy and stained it. So I just took it out and siliconed all the cracks and leaks, but the headliner is ruined so I might have to have someone custom fab. a new headliner. And for the Door Panels, the driver side one broke. The rubber bracket thing that holds up the power bottons broke some how so the bottoms have no support to hold up. So i just took the door panel off to fix it but never came around to it. So I took off the passenger one to even everything out

There is a company in Canada called Squidskins that makes fiberglass and carbon fiber body kits for 2g DSMs. Pricey, but for approx a 700lb weight reduction, maybe worthwhile mod.

Wow, now if I had a second gen I might look into that. Thanks for the info though, I have a friend that might be interested. So it doesn't look like anyone knows about taking out the bumper supports, that's allright, 2400 isn't bad. Chris

i took out carpet, padding and all sound deadener,i put it in a huge garbage bag, it was very heavy like 100 150 pounds. its louder in the car but cool, i wouldnt take out youre supports though you need those i would think.

I removed my spare tire as it was dry rotting. I also removed my rear seats and carpeted over the area so it "ALMOST" looks factory, seriously I did a pretty good job.

I also saved some weight with my aftermarket exhaust.

That's probably all i'm going to do though. I could not live with much else removed. I love the back seats gone though, I have much more storage space which has definitly come in handy; and I no longer have to be the driver when my buds and I go out.

you're right, it is pricey....but definately would give you some weight savings.

i personally would only change my seats, remove the rear seats, spare, and have a CF hood (have one now) and maybe remove the a/c condenser (i have a leak somewhere in the a/c system) for the sake of weight reduction...

if ur going to buy the race bumpers why dont u just totally just take off ur bumpers.... for at a drag strip then put em back on when ur done. ull be lighter, and cheaper way.

no ac, no emissions equipment, no intake manifold brace, some heatshielding removed on ehxhaust parts, no more horsecock shifter (hey every ounce counts), lighter wheels, no rear seats, no spare, no rear bumper support, and as soon as the fmic project gets done, the front bumper support will have next to nothing left of it, in fact imake just make up some supports for the bumper to bolt to. i still have the leather seats in it though so i need to get at least one sparco in for the driver to shed a few more pounds. then i'll ditch both the auto seat belts for 4 point harnesses.
