Need your help about rear diff.

Hi all

I've just broken the center and rear LSDs on my 97 eagle talon Tsi AWD , and want to replace the rear one first. I may have to buy a whole carrier assemble. The question is will all the 2g rear diffs. fit for my car, or I have to stick on the parts from the same model. The mechanician from dealership told me that the parts have to meet the following:

Locking diff. w/ limited slip
viscous clutch
3.545 Ratio

Your mechanic is correct, that is what you need and all 2g rear diffs with manual transmissions are the same. Auto's have a different ratio so they won't work.

Just out of curiosity how did you break both differentials?

Sounds like he played around with dropping the clutch a little too high.

Thank you guys very much, so I can buy the whole rear diff with axles which is part out from all 95 to 99 GSX or from 95 to 99 Tsi manu cars? Just want to make sure. Sorry for my poor English, sometimes I just can not fully understand your replies.


Last Saturday is a bad day for me, when I was driving on I-80, the rear left tire explored, I had to pull it over and almost been hit by a truck behind me . The bad thing was the spare tire is a flat tire, my friend then sent me his spare tire which is smaller than mine to me. Then I drove about 80 miles on this tire. When I was almost reaching home, a 90 degree left turn made the two rear tires locked . My poor baby...

Spare tires should not be used on cars with a limited slip differential. If there is a difference in tire size the differential can heat up and die just like yours.

Thanks, I will not do it again. And I will buy a stock rim w/ tire on it.

And there are two more questions:

It seems that some 2g GSXs don't have rear diff. , is it correct?
If it is correct, how can you guys tell whether a rear assembly has diff. or not?

Will drops the clutch too high also hurt diffs.? May be I need to buy a quaife diff., since OBX and AMC don't produce center diffs. for DSM cars. Although the quality can not beat quaife, they are a lot cheap.

All GSX (AWD) models have a rear differential. The question is whether it has a limited slip differential (LSD) or open differential. Limited slip differentials cannot take different size tires. The stock differentials are: Front=open Center=limited slip Rear=Can be either.

To be technical you should replace all 4 tires at the same time. I've heard even small differences in wear between tires or manufacturer size differences can cause differential failure. I have different brands (same wear) on the front and rear and have had no problems. It's up to you whether to risk it.

Dropping the clutch is hard on everything in the drive train. You could wreck your clutch, transmission, drive shaft, differentials, axles, etc...
