anyone done this before?

It's been done, I don't remember exactly how but I do know it involved removing a few extra things to get clearance to tilt it as it needed to be. I can't remember if it sounded like it was worth it. Might be easier to just pull the tranny and lift the motor out.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. The thread I've read was here on tuners, i'm sure you can find it with a little search:thumb:

defenatly worth doing!!! With a lift and an engine hoist I was able to drop the engine out the bottom with the tranny still on the motor in about an hour, start to finish. Putting it back in was a little more difficult because you kinda got to get the tranny and engine twisted right, and that took about 2 hours, total (includding hooking everything back up). Totally the best way to do it. :thumb:

I dropped the tranny, And then the motor right out of the bottom of my awd parts car, In the grass, With one jackstand, Soggy/wet/muddy grass, And a shitty little jack to change tires.. So yes, It definatly can be done.

You COULD put the car on two rolling jacks, one behind each front wheel on each side. Put the motor in front of the car. Then pull the car over the motor. THEN, use the cherry picker to pull the motor up from the bottom.

Pulling the car seems like it far fetched but if you have a clean surface and a few extra hands its not all that difficult. Promise ;)

Easiest way is to remove the alternator for more clearance and drop everything in at once. I did this with my cousin a couple weeks ago and he's an auto with a bigger looking tranny than the manual. We used an engine hoist with the car supported on jackstands in the grass in his backyard. We tilted the tranny side down first into the engine bay and the rest was easy. I know it's kind of late now but thought I would share my .02.

You talking about a 420a? or 4g63? Just checking because it's a common error.

I'm talking about a 420A. My cousin has a 98 GS that I'm helping him with from time to time because he doesn't know anything about DSM's and I also was a previous 420A owner before I bought my GST.:thumb:

Definately do that ... I've replaced 2 engines, one was done this way and the other I dropped the tranny before lifting the engine, and then replaced the tranny when the motor was in place and it proved to be a HUGE PITA.

It was a night and day difference... leaving the tranny connected not only made the job easier, but also cut the time in half that it took to remove/replace the engine.

It helps ALOT if you have one of those crank handles that allows you to change the verticle axis of the motor/trans assembly w/o resting it somewhere and screwing around with chains.

Good Luck, thats a fun project :thumb:

You revived the thread and opposed nearly everyone elses recommendations...I've been involved with both process' on a 420a and it is definitely easier going out the bottom with the tranny/motor as opposed to out the top with any combination.

i just pulled my 420a with the trans attached and it was well worth the time saved. i removed the radator for front clearance, detached the power steering pump, a/c compressor, tied them up, then just turned it diagonally and pulled it out the top... the transmission comes close to your ECM harness, but it clears
