Well...

My car is finally starting to disagree with turbo...clutch is about to go, starting to knock and its not shifting so great. I had fun with turbo for a while but I've decided it is time for the turbo to go. So...I am gonna be starting a lil project...my 4G63 all motor build....(cue up dramatic music)

I know what you are all thinking but I'm not looking for big horsepower here, or even kinda big horsepower....just a really reliable, kinda quick, daily driver. As I said I had my fun with turbo and I want to try something different, so please no one flame me on here about what a waste of time this is going to be or how I should just go turbo or whatever....been there, done that, wanna do something else.

A little part list that I plan on completing by the end of March 2004. (graduation presents!)

1st Stage
NGK plugs and wires
all fluids, hoses etc...
basically put car in perfect tune and running order

2nd Stage
Injen Short Ram Air Intake (w/ removed air can)
Hedman Chikara Header
Custom 2.5 catback with Apexi N1 series muffler

3rd stage
AEM Cam Gears
Crower stage 3 cams (will perform at about the level of a stage 1.5-2 on my NT)
Ross 10.5:1 forged pistons
ACT 2100 with stock disk
Pacesetter short shifter

4th Stage (Only if i decide to opt for nitrous)
Venom High-flow Fuel Rail
Holley High Impediance, high flow injectors
Magnus Motorsports Intake Manifold
Walbro 255LPH fuel pump
NX Express Single stage 35-50-75 shot

So there is my little wish-list of parts, stage 3 should be completed by end of March. I'm also doing some exterior cosmetics, as well as a new paint job. I'll be documenting with pictures the whole way to fill you guys in on how the progress is moving along. Turbo along with a few supporting parts have already been sold to a friend who is going down the bolt-on path. Tomorrow will be working on putting NT parts back on, various gaskets, filters, hoses, fluids....LOL so I should be done with stage one by the end of Thursday. Heres hoping everything goes well!

sounds sweet......your going to be doing what all us n/t wanted to do before we realized how easy it will be to turbo the car......you should get some decent power by stage 3.....and you might need some type of fuel controller to compensate for that high of compression....
i definately can't wait to see you results....
good luck

thanx man, been workin on the car all day..got her all put back together..gonna snap some pics a lil lata on today and show u guys the progress...(i was working on it all weekend too so i got a bunch of stuff done.)

there's no way you'll need a 255lph pump on an nt, a turbo pump would be more than enough probably and if you absolutely needed more a 3000gt vr-4 pump or walbro 190 would work just fine. plus it'll save you messing with an adjustable regulator

I totally agree, the biggest fuel pump you'll need would be that of a turbo car. That is, unless you plan on running injectors bigger than approx. 500cc.

You might also want to invest in a heafty ignition control unit for... 1. to control the 10.5 compression from detonation and 2. to have sufficient spark retard for the Nitrous at the high comp.

Also, do you plan on opening up the the head? (eg. 1mm oversized valves.) This will dramtically increase the efficiency of your N/A 4G63. Make sure you do it right with S.S. valves & double springs to let you rev the piss out of the engine. Especially since you'll probably get most of your power above 3500rpm. (big cams = crummy idle)

Just one more suggestion. If you do travel the Nitrous route, be sure to grab some forged internals for a piece of mind.

thanx for the suggestions fellas :thumb:, im not sure if im gonna go all out with the head (valves adn springs and such) funds are fairly limited to what i have selected so might be something i do down the road. the ignition control unit is also something ive been looking for to see what kind of money im gonna have to throw down on one, the Ross pistons are also going to be forged, and i think the rods i have will hold up fine if i do decide to add a small shot.

I run the 10.5:1 CR Wiescos in my 420A. I have no ignition mods and no pre-det either. I'm not sure how the 4G63 takes to higher CR, but it isn't such a bad idea to get some ignition upgrades anyway. Just thought I'd help ease any doubts about upping compression like that.

From a NT perspective, the better you make the engine flow the air, the more "zip" you're going to get out of it. While larger valves may not be what you're looking for, getting some port work done to the head will definitely be a plus to you. Don't forget about the larger TB and perhaps getting your intake mani ported as well. Those mods, with a decent exhaust set up will net you some cripser acceleration.

If you ever want to get together and talk NT with some other local people, there are close to a dozen of us meeting pretty regularly here in Phoenix. We'd love to help out.

Reader Beware...

You can't compare the successes and/or failures of the 420A with the successes and/or failures of the 4G63NT. (insert clishé here) Its like apples and oranges. The 420A has a stock compression ratio of 9.6:1. To go to a CR of 10.5:1 is not even a full compression point (0.9). Where as in the 4G63 the CR is only a trim 9.0:1 you're going up 1.5 points to 10.5:1. This is just something to think about... 10:1 might be safer with out the ignition upgrade.

p.s. Just a suggestion:thumb:

That's a good point! I was unaware of the lower compression in the 4G63s there. Even so, I still believe I said that an ignition upgrade is a worthwhile investment, if not for performance, then peace-of-mind.

Just one more suggestion. If you do travel the Nitrous route, be sure to grab some forged internals for a piece of mind.

The stock 4G63 internals will handle 65 hp just fine. I have 165K on my mill and still spray. As far as added fuel, a fuel rail is a waste of time, there is no way you could outflow the stock rail with a N/T. Just put a turbo pump in it and that should be enough, mabye a fuel filter with a straight through design, as opposed to a little banjo fitting. I wouldn't buy anything from pacesetter, i have their header and i had to drill out some of the stud holes because they were the wrong size, not to mention that none of their stuff fits at all. And last, an injen intake is a waste of money unless you care about the name and how shiny it is. they're all the same, a tube with a filter. Good luck with your project! :dsm:

thanx for the suggestions Rali///Art, well the project has hit a setback.....:(....somebody tried to pick both my driverside adn passenger side locks with what im guessing was a screw driver and now the tumblers are all messed up...which means if i lock my car i dont get back in...:(....and i live in Phoenix, the number one city in the country for car theft, Dandy! So anyways after these people abused my door locks they tried to break the window, but just put a big ass crack straight down the middle. THEN, (how i didnt hear this in the middle of the night astounds me, but i was in a drunk...scratch that, VERY drunk passed out sleep) these guys wedge somethign under the lining on the top of my window and try to push the window down by hand to get to the lock on the inside of the car, they mananged to push my window down an inch and break it off the track but they didnt manage to get past that...THEN (go DSM for making these cars a bi*** to break into) they went to work on the driver side window and pushed it down enough to get the car open. This is just the way me and my friends pieced together what happened so it could have happened differently but it seems liek the most logical order. So yea my 300 dollar kenwood deck, my collection of at least 100 cds (times that times at least 10 bucks a cd...wow!) and my two rear Boston 6x9s are all gone. This happened saturday night and i wasnt happy, (ended up punching a few holes in my bedroom door, im not good with anger..  ) So now i have to get my locks fixed...(just gonna get an alarm with keyless entry, the locks are too expensive)...get my windows fixed, and later on get my stereo equipment replaced. Rut number 1 has been hit in this project, im not quite sure what im gonna do yet or how long this is going to delay things but im going downstairs right now to take pics and ill post them on here lata tonight!

its hard to see because of the glare but i tried to take a picture of the crack that runs all the way across my window...this was the only real visible damage, the locks are scratched up but not that bad and the stereo is well, just missing so i didnt think i needed to take a picture of a hole.

this is a pic from about 7 or 8 months ago with my goofy ass standing next to the car. Paint was MUCH more shiny then. but at least u guys can see the car...

and finally a pic of the engine bay when the car is back to NT form and up and running, u can see one of my new engine mounts and two of my new struts in the pic, put the air can back on becuase the intake hose is dry rotted and wont support the wieght of the filter by itself. the engine bay looks so empty compared to when the turbo was in there!

sorry this page might be a bit of a loader for you guys without cable or DSL, im not quite sure how big those pics are.

Damn do0d. Sucks to hear about the worthless shitbags jacking your shit man. One of the 2GNT guys I hang with actually caught the fools rolling up behind his Eclipse with their lights off the other night when he was sitting in the shadows smoking. They saw him and took off, honked the horn 3 times at the corner and another car with no lights flew away after them. He got so lucky.

Look on the bright side though, you're not the only on ein this town with jacked up locks and dented trim. I still haven't done any more than replace the CD player and glass from my break in over 4 years ago! :p

yea i wish i could have caught the bastards that stole my stuff, oh man it would not be pretty...me and my favorite baseball bat would go to jail for a LONG time after that....
