alright guys, i've got a 96 2gnt with 135k miles of stress. sometimes under heavy acceleration out of 1st and 2nd gear, the rpms seem to stall or it sounds like my exhaust is backfiring. what im wondering is, am i near the end of my engines life or could it be something that im not aware of? any help or tips or advice or anything is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like you need new spark plugs and wires. I had a fair amount of backfire when one of my plugs was fowled. I doubt your engine is done. You could always do a compression test to find out before replacing the wires/plugs.

It's not your motor dieing at all. How long has it been since you had service for the plugs wires coil and so on. When was the last cat put on the car? What about the fuel filter? There are lots of things that could cause the problem are you getting any codes?

thanks for the replies so far, but about three months ago i replaced both wires and plugs at the same time. maybe a month later my cel came back on but didnt get it checked because it was going into the shop the next day. after two weeks in the shop, i got it back with no cel. so i doubt its the wires and plugs. fuel filter, im not sure how long its been since that's been replaced so that might be a start. i'll change the fuel filter soon and see if that fixes everything, if not, you'll see me again. thanks again for the advice.

Now that Kirby mentions it - it could be fuel related. I have my Scirocco in the shop for the same thing right now becaues it was back firing somewhat and cutting out really bad and bucking. The transfer pump was just replaced by one of my mechanics but a different guy I brought it to today said that it's out again?

Ay, when was the last time you used a timing light to check the ignition timing? That should be one of the first things you check when you have a little problem like this, of course, you may have fouled a spark plug and that is making it run a bit rich, chris

Can you use a timing lite on an engine with computer controlled timing and no distributor? These cars have a coil pack and the only way to mess with ignition timing at all is to pull it out with a crane or MSD.

Hmm, I think youre right, my fault, 95 was the first year you can not change the timing, hmm, I'll check into that, have you run a decoder on it to see if it'll throw a code at you? Fuel injectors could also need cleaned, just go though the entire fuel and ignition system, you'll find your problem, chris
