My tranny's syncros have been going for some time now, and I have finally decided to get my tranny rebuilt. But I would like a taller first gear. I was thinking about the evo but some one told me that I would have to buy all the gears to make the first gear fit is this true or is my friend full of shit

Brian

Boosted59 is correct on this one, but why would you want a taller gear, do you road race/ rally and want closer gear ratio? Check out TRE for this they also have a differnet gear set for all the gears.:talon:

why is it better to have the vr4 1st gear?

Elementry my Dear watson, Your 1st gear is fine and dandy in stock application, but when you start modding your 1st gear is over so quick, that it just kills your 0-60. The GVR4 gear is TALLER and will allow you to stay in gear longer and pick up speed faster, will help you o-60 time so much more.

I am doing this on Tuesday, I can't wait as I am rebuildingth tranny, and a clutch/New aluminum flywheel and so on.

Get it from TRE, you need to change the entire input shaft to fit it, no biggy, it costs $200 to get the entire setup, well worth it.

Leave your first gear alone. I have the TRE first and noticed NO difference. In traffic, at the track, just cruising, accelerating.... nothing. My friends car has a GVR4 1st and I notice no difference there either. I was told to expect faster 60', faster 0-60, blah blah blah... nadda. I feel your money is better spent elsewhere or just save that $200 and put it back in your pocket.

Are you sure you got the GVR$ gear? You you REALLY want to go nuts, TRE sells a Custom 1st gear that is even taller and goes to 45MPH, which is NUTS for a dsm, but you need some power over stock to pull effectiuvely.

Again, I came accross a LOT of money and just bought liek everything from TRE. This is what I am doin to my Tranny on Tuesday.

FIdanza Aluminum Flywheel-New
eClutchmasters 6-puck with 2500 pound pressure plate
1-2/3-4 Shift forks
New 3/4 Hub and sleeve
Gears1-4 Synchros
New Trash Magnet
GVR4 ist gear
GVR4 Input shaft
New bearings all around
new seals all around
Stainless steel clutch Cable
Synchro Shift
Symbrosky shift shift kit.

I will give a review on how I feel about thsi gear, I wish I could have put in a GS-T top gear, especiually after my head swap, I will need it.

I guess this was directed at me... No, I do not have the GVR4 first gear, I have the custom TRE 1st gear.

I noticed no difference after installing it. I am still in 1st gear for less than a heartbeat. Well, to launch right, I have to rev about 500rpms higher. That is the difference I noticed. I revved it out to 7500 in 1st when I installed it just to see and it doesn't hit 45MPH. Not even close. Can't remember what it hit, but I will do it on the way home to get you a real number. Then I will run out 1st in my 2G and get a comparison number.

My friend has a GVR4 1st in his car. I know it is a GVR4 1st because it was pulled out of his wrecked GVR4 tranny. Again, I noticed no difference other than needing to launch at a higher rpm.

If you, or anyone for that matter, want to get the GVR4 or TRE 1st, by all means please do. You learn from doing. I am just sharing my experiences. If you came into a lot of money and want to get it, go for it.

Also, from the sound of it, you plan on building up your car to a decent power level. I noticed, or didn't notice, upgraded rail ears or an upgraded center diff. While it is apart is the best time to do those. Do you have plans for that?

I have new spyder gears and teh Center diff is in great shape as it has been rebuilt, what do you suggest I do again?

care to share your secret of success?

College education and being in the right place at the right time to take advantage of a money making opportunity, so I bought the best shit for my car as it was disposable income, can't hurt to buy these parts and it is worth a try.

Because I said I would do testing and post results, and finally remembered to actually test it out...

1G with TRE 1st gear... 32MPH at ~6.5K RPM
2G with sotck 1st gear... 26MPH at ~6.5K RPM

can i do anything to my n/t fwd trans. my gears are REAL short and with my stroker i have a feeling im gonna need a bigger first gear. i can see my wheels spinning now

Maybe, you will spin them more obviously, but not as much as you think. You may make as much HP as a Stock GS-T so you won't be having much problems. If you do head work, cams, and then NO2 you will be in trouble then.

Are the pistons and rods stong enough to handle boost?

i hvebrc forged aluminum stroker pistons with 11:0:1 compression ratio and big rods w/ arp rd bolt in them. id say th internals can hole 450hp. im gonna throw a 100 shot on it in the future when i start working. but i think im in for seom spinnin when its in

WOW, why not run a small turbo setup, like a T3 at 6 psi, that may add another 100 HP to what you have with tuning, that is one serious engine.

it shoul be cool non-turbo. i dont want to run forced induction just yet. i would like o run a all motor setup top get my tuning skills set rightthen go all outwith a bad ass turbo motor. if i go turbo im goina ross pistons with a 8:5:1 compression ratio, pauter rods, stroker crank, fp green turbo, balance shafts remved, and a ffwd connection death head. ill back that up with 720cc injectors, magnus mani, bushur racing cai, and some other goodies.

for now though its the n/t motor. i want to hear this thing hit the track. i may build the ead to hol 8.5k revs. i dont know though.

Honestly, if you are gona spend all that money, why not just go turbo? You may not have as much off throttle torque, but you will certainly have more peque torque and HP.

Just runa Turbo on top of that setup you have there, it should hold NICELY, i mean a Honda S2000 with it's WEAK ass rods can hold 8PSI on the street with pump gas. Get your car running, run 9psi, and your shit will be original and fast.

Turbo man, do it.

to much extra stuff. i have almost everything i need now, if i were to go turbo id need a new oil pan, turbo mani, turbo, turbo mas and some other stuff. im just gonna stay n/a for now.

unless i work the hell out of the head, get better coneecting rods, run 116 octane gas and run it as a drag motor. 11:0:1 with like 20psi on 116 octane. damn thats an ideaOMG
