Hackin the air can

Ok, can someone tell me step by step to "hack the air can" so i can finally get some cheap peformance out of my stock 94 ES?

I wouldn't bother hacking up the air can here is a better idea that will give you more flow then even hacking the air can. Buy a k&n replacement filter. Take the can off and attach (sp?) the filter to the lid of the can (as if the filter is replacing the can). Then you can use some zip ties to hold the filter in place but if you dont it doesnt really matter. this will give you more then adiquit (sp?) flow over hacking the can. Also while you are at it take the air silencer off. It is located above the MAF in the air can lid. Its a little metal circle with a star like filter in it. You will notice a good gain. If you want better flow either get or make a solid metal intake pipe instead of the crappy rubber one that has accordian bends to it.

P.S. The air filter shouldnt be more then 40 bucks and it's cleanable with a 100,000,000 (or 100,000...not sure) mile warrenty

uhm thats about the only cheap mods there are for the NT. Next would be exhaust.

Mikey is totally correct on that procedure, and it worked great. As for better mods, maybe if you can bring the engine heat down in the bay, that could help you out. The really bad thing about our cars is getting cold air into the bay. If we could put our intakes lower into the bumber, we probably would see better performance, unfortunately our intakes dont' go down that far. The only other cheap modification I can think of is reducing weight, and that could help your 1/4 time incrediably.

other day. The guy on here has a honda, but It looks like it'll work on a
DSM. I might try it, but if anyone else has done it, let me know how it works.

How can i get rid of the filter light after i take off the silencer?

I didn't really think about just taking off the can, but here is a way to make a custom ram intake without spending a dime. I did hack apart my airbox, but with good reason. I just tried to expose as mush filter as possible, but I left the little part where the snorkel attached. If you'll notice, there is a s-shaped tube that goes down through the engine compartment to a resonator in front of the tire. If you can get the resonator out(it isn't that easy)you can cut a big hole in the front of it. Then you reinstall everything, and seal off the end of the snorkel that goes behind your headlight. If you stick your arm in behind your fog-lights you can feel the hole you cut in the resonator. This will force air up through the s-shaped hose and right into your airfilter. I didn't think that the power gains would be that noticeable, but with a K&N it gets so much more air. My car is definitely quicker and sounds a whole lot healthier. I highly recommend this mod, and it's free. If you don't want to cut the can apart you could leave it on and just do the ram air mod. this might actually be a help at speed, but I wanted more bottom end acceleration too.

I just made two pieces of thin sheet metal and ran them from the two bolts from the aircan and use them as a wedge for the filter to sit on.

hey zrm96... I'm trying to think of a way to create my own CAI... The Hole in the resomator idea sounds good... could I cut the whole bottom of the resonator out? And do you think that an air filter would fit down there? I haven't got down to look yet... I just installed a mesh grille so I'm going to be a little frustrated if I take it off so do you happen to have any dimentions? Oh yeah do any of you have any clue where I could put that retarded MAS if I put a metal pipe on with a new air filter? That MAS is huge....
