I have been under consideration of a few things that I have head lately, and when I bought my Eclipse 3 weeks ago it didn't come with the manifold exhaust cover... What's the best heat wrap to use to minimize the heat in the bay.... I am thinking about getting headers and I don't want any more heat in my bay... thanks...
 
Just look at some kind of insalation they use on pipes to cool them down for heat resistance. My dad's friend with the 50K dragster, he put some kind of wrap around his exhaust manifold, and I guess it really keeps down the heat for better performance to get cold air. As for cold air intakes for the 1.8, if maybe more people asked for them, we would get them. Take off your air can, have a K&N Filter, clip your filter onto the MAS, then find some kind of tie to go on and make it so that your intake pipe can't sit on your clutch. That always sucks.

Again, at the wrap, just ask Home Depot, or Lowes, and ask them what makes a good heat resistance.
 
Never mind... Mass Airflow Sensor.... I do have another question though... When talking about Air Intakes: Why does everyone say that you need to have a metal pipe rather than the stock rubber one? The both do the same function and if you rapped them both with heat rap then the engine heat would not heat up the piping... I was just wondering Because I'm looking at possibly making my own CAI for the 1.8 and I'm open to Ideas, but if I don't have to figure out the angle measurements that I have to cut the metal piping then I don't want to. Oh and do you have any ideas about how to get more cold air into the bay? The stock setup doesn't get a direct line of air into the system... If there were a way to get a direct line then that would = more cold air...
 
There has been idea's how to get "cold air" into our bay's. As for results, people have cutt the hump on our hoods into a "ram air" system and had cold air coming into the bay. Then creating the cold air that our engine's need critically. Unfortunately, if you have snow and other stuff coming into that, you could either damage your motor, or just always have one wet engine.

Making your own intake, I think is a pretty good idea if you could figure out how to do it. For 250 dollars though, as much as another Injen Intake, you probably could come up with something pretty damn good. If your looking for performance for a NT, nothing will look good, most thing's will look ghetto, but your looking for the best hp you can get. If you could get clean/cold air from the bottom of the bumper, that would be even better, because cold air stay's low.

Best thing to do though, if you don't have the tools, is buy a Injen Intake and port it out smooth, and then it will be perfect for some hp upgrade.

Then again, best thing is to be turbo ;)
 
Soundman707, it's all about the smooth flow of fluids. To prevent turbulence as much as possible. The same reason the IM and EM are extrude honed. Personally, I used factory intake piping from the junkyard to rig up my ram CAI. I went more for functon over aesthetics.
 
Sounds like I have some planning to do... I am considering porting out my intake manifold, but the question I have is: Can a 2.0L intake manifold fit onto a 1.8L? I also read somewhere that putting a 1/4 inch gasket in between the head and the IM would reduce heat in the IM... I might do that too... See with the wimpy stock 1.8 I need to take whatever I can get.
 
What do you guys think about usng a piece of radiator hose as my tube for my CAI and then heat rapping the tube. This will eliminate unnecessary angles and still give ridgid support... But do you think that I could find hose big enough? (3in).... I could take that line straight into the lower bumper where it could get the most air....
 
If I were you, I would find some alluminum piping, rubber doesn't keep very much heat out, unless you wrap it of course. As for a 2.0 Intake manifold fitting, this is your results:

See the difference? The ports are way bigger since it is dual over head cam. Which comes to the assumption that there is no way in hell it will fit.

As for porting your intake manifold, that's a good idea. I did it too actually, basically ported the whole thing, very good idea on both manifolds. Expect quickly accleration, and alittle bit more horsepower. A 4g63 with this upgrade saw nicer acceleration, and alittle more top end power. His 4G63 is running at like 145, maybe even 150, with only a K&N filter, and his manifolds ported and polished.

It makes the difference. Like I said though in your previously posts, the problem is if you can't wire up your MAS, you'll be screwed, so you might have to do double piping, which then leads you to how to keep your filter on ;)
 
Do you think that rapping it would do the Job? Auto Zone said that they did not have any radiator hose larger than 2in. and the smallest I'll go is 2.5 in. So I guess I'll keep thinking... I'm going to put a water bypass valve in so I think I'll put that MAS right before that valve.
