Hey guys I pulled my plugs today to find moisture in cylinder 2 and excesive moisture/oil build up on the plug of cylinder 4. There is also an oily sludge on the piston if I look through the plug hole.

Ive done some reading around and the common issue associated with a moisture/oil buildup on a plug is a bad head gasket or bad piston rings.

Before I invest in a new hg and head studs and piston rings Id like to see if I can get some fedback about how running with an open exhaust after the downpipe would affect the engine, and if it could be the cause of my problem.

If need be I will verify compression before proceeding to pull the head.

Before you do that yes do a compression test, but nice piece of maintenance to do if your unsure of the last hg job.

Well its a new motor, ive put just north of 1500 miles on it in the past year. Ive been having all kinds of issues with it, but never seen plugs look this nasty. It was pretty bad.

Thanks for your input, I was discussing the issue with my father and we were talking about the lack of back pressure that is associated with running open header/downpipe.

I just thought it would something to check out, I'd hate to find out I have a bad hg or piston rings on a fairly new engine.

You can have great compression, but still have bad oil rings. Only way to really figure that out is through process of elimination. If compression, seals, guides, and head gasket all check out then i would suspect worn oil rings.
