My downpipe cracked (very badly) , basically completely into two pieces. So now my exhaust is loud as hell and the car doesn't idle very good. My mechanic is 45 minutes away and I'm wondering if it is ok for me to drive my car that far or if it could cause damage to my car or turbo?

sounds like your problem is your dp cracked before your o2 sensor. that would explain your idle problems. this could result in too much or not enough fuel. how lucky do you feel?

having your downpipe cracked or open would only increase your performance, you would have faster spool up. the 2nd o2 sensor only reads if your cat is working so it shouldn't create a problem in your idle or while driving.

yeah if increase performance you mean take away torque and if it is broken before the 1st o2 sensor then your fuel will be messed up. he said the car was idling poorly, should be a hint. :thumb:

i just put in my cutout and the turbo spools faster but the torque is gone. my cutout it after the first o2 sensor so it is ok. thats my point. if it is after the 1st o2 sensor you are good. since you said the dp i would assume it is before.

Ya i tried hitting boost to test it out and it seems that I have no torque. I'm getting it fixed tommorow though so I should be fine.

Because if it's before the 1st o2 sensor the air/fuel mixture could be off. If it's lean, and he's boosting, of course could lead to knock and we all know what knock can lead to..

Just make sure he's at WOT and the ECU will ignore the O2 all together. So if you plan on boosting, drop the hammer.

Yes it would increase performance. It would suffer torque on low rpm but at top end its torque and hp would increase. Also like our turbo cars our 1st o2 sensor is at the o2 housing not on the downpipe. hopefully his 1st o2 sensor is on the o2 housing. only livid knows where exactly his/her downpipe is cracked.

wouldn't it run rich not lean? doesn't the mas also help on air/fuel mixture? I don't think boosting on partial throttle would create knock or enough knock to make serious damage.
I think TimG was being sarcastic about goin wot because yes the o2 sensor is not in need when going wot. Livid please check for boost leaks

I believe he's running a t3. They don't have a o2 housing, we get a bung welded to the downpipe. Usually on the lower half also. Which is why we are assuming that is where it cracked, not to mention hotter exhaust temperatures.

all these if's and maybe's goin around...how bout we stick to the facts :thumb:

here's one: 420a uses MAP sensor

:rocks:

if the front o2 sensor reads lean--or not at all the ecu is thrown into default mode of running pig rich :thumb:

i love all these 4g63 guys talking like they know the 420a :nono: maf wtf. some of you are ok the rest don't help at all. all you are going to do is help someone blow thier car up.
I don't know what's sadder...the fact that they think they can come in here and know everything, or the fact that some of them honestly don't even know what thread/forum they're posting in :shhh:

Anywho...not all of the 4g guys are bad. It's understandable that some have actually seen a 420a before, and others even owned their own n/t model...but it's the other 75% who automatically assume they are better and smarter :notgood:

now back to your regularly scheduled tech thread... :spam:

Did you get the dp fixed livid?

The shop wasnt opened until today. So im bringing it down in about an hour. I feel like yes there is a boost leak, but Im not sure. I hear the turbo spool and im getting no torque. I'm tryin to stay light on the pedal and keep it out of boost. The DP that is on the car right now is a custom DP . The o2 sensor is located farther down the exhaust.. The way that the DP is cracked does allow most of the exhaust to still exit the exhaust.

It's cut completely in 2 pieces. Hard to tell by the pictures.

You will be fine driving it. When I first put my turbo on, my downpipe ended about a foot past the turbo. It idled like ass and sometimes died until the ecu realized the o2 sensor was not pluged into the downpipe, then it tripped the CEL and was smooth sailing from there. The turbo will sound a lot louder too, but no harm should come from it.

I made it to the mechanics. So looks like everything should be good. I'm putting a 3" exhaust and custom 3" DP on it. Hopefully will go 3" on everything soon (intercooler piping) and maybe a gt35r in the near future. We'll see how it runs with this exhaust though. Thanks for all your feedback and help.

full 3" exhaust will definitely give u quicker spool up time :thumb:

umm, as for the 3" ic piping.....why? WTF

plenty of guys run 2.25" and 2.5" seems to be the most popular, but by going as big as 3" you're basically counteracting the results of getting a bigger exhaust :notgood: :shhh:

can we say LAAAAAG ;) :p

how much hp you lookin to make cuz the GT35r is a pretty big turbo OMG

anywho, hope ya got your exhaust done :rocks:
keep us informed :dsm:

OOOOO, I was under the impression that if my IC piping was smaller than my exhaust then it defeats the purpose of having a large exhaust, but if not then I guess I will keep it like that. I want to get some nice HP / Torque numbers thats why I wouldn't mind going to a ball bearing turbo instead of what I have, but after talking to my mechanic today, he talked me into keeping the one i have, because of the quick spool times and only wanting to run 15-20 psi MAX.
