Leather Dye [Merged 6-9] dying

Ok, so im finally finishing my interior, and i want to change the color of my seats. I would go get them re-upholstered, but i dont have the money for Katz-skinz or something like that. I figure SEM dye or somethign of the sort should work well.

How many of you guys have used the SEM dye? Would you recommend it for use on the back seats, and temporary use on the front seats until i can purchase some racing seats?

I have some of the dupli-color viny;/carpet stuff left from when i did my dash and door panels. It worked really well on that, but im afraid it might rub off easily if it is on the seats, has anyone tried the dupli-color vinyl on the leather seats?

Any of you guys used both? Which did you like better?

Thanks.

Bump..

I know someone on here has experience with SEM dye.. just wondering if its better than the Dupli-color vinyl stuff.

Is there any specific soap i should use when prepping my leather seats for dye? On the can it says "wash with soap and water", bust doesnt recommend and specific types. Would i be ok with dish soap, or should i use somethign else?

I would use Dove(bar or liquid)...just because it doesn't have any of those weird chemicals like dish soap or something like that does.(at least that's what the Dermatologist told me)

Probably doesn't matter though...goodluck :talon:

You want a soap that doesn't leave ANY residue. I don't know for sure, but I think Dove leaves some skin conditioners behind, and doesn't rinse completely off (on purpose). Dish soap is usually very alkaline, and if you wash leather with that, it will take all the oils out of your leather. I don't know if that is such a good idea either. I know that SEM has a soap that you can use in preparation for thier dye. You might want to look at that.

Go to a local NAPA or AutoPaint place and buy a can of "Plastic Prep". This will remove any and all dirt or leather treatment (armor-all, etc.) so that the paint/dye can stick to the leather.

Take some pics and let me know how it works out because I've thought about doing this as well. :D

Well, I used a mostly water w/ a little Palmolive mixture. It took off a ton of oil, dirt greas etc. When i was done scrubbing it down for the second time the water in the bucket was the most disgusting blackish-green ive ever seen, i guess the soap worked. We'll see how the dye reacts when it's finished.

I'll post some pics up later, i'll start a new thread and throw up some pics of my whole interior progress.

Anyone had any experience with doing this?

I have some tan seats I'm wanting to do black. They are in good condition without cracks. Is there still prep work before applying the dye?

Just curious results/ brand recommendations/ what to stay away from?

Also, since the seats in the back aren't real leather, does the leather dye work just the same on the back seat?

And how much would be needed to do 2 rear seats on the 1g and possibly the fronts/ backs on a 2g?

Any other info regarding dying the leathers would appreciated!

we used to have a guy who came in a did this at the hot rod shop i used to work at.i was impressed! he would spray it out of a paint gun, and it looked 100% just like factory color.seems like it took a couple days to dry though.it wasnt much, maybe $150 for two seats removed from the car,lil more if he had to take them out.id look into this method,it turned out pretty nice!
i looked around and i think i found what he used.pretty sure this is the same stuff, but it was mixed and applied like this stuff is,so it should work great.
Leather & Vinyl Dyes

I'm picking up a set of Tan RSX Seats to mod and install in my 1g. However the Tan. well that isn't going to work for me. they atleast have to be black just like my stock seats. However I wanna do something different. Red inside and black outside. I'm not worried about color. Was going to use Pigment dye. But what I'm wondering is how it works...Will I have an issue dying the insides first, letting dry, cleaning and dying again, and letting dry and masking the insides and dying the outside a different color... will the color dye bleed? If I mask the inside of the seat, and dye the outside, will the black color bleed into the red, even tho I'm not directly applying it? Or is it only going to dye where I touch the dye?

Just a cheap, quick photoshop to give myself an idea if I like it, which I do. I want my back seats done the same way, but they are black, and I don't think you can really dye over black properly...I'd prob have to pull the seat skin, and clean the dye out huh?
