I am a veteran dsm guy and know that no knock sensor is not usually a good thing but have crippling phantom knock off idle and need it gone right now. I have done all the usual stuff ,new knock sensor, run premium fuel, mccc treatments, etc. I did get rid of it with eprom ecu and custom chip but am selling the car now and sold the eprom and put stock one in. I am at lowest boost possible and for sure not worried about real knock right now.
So what happens if disconnect the knock sensor. I tried it today and didn't even see a code. Will it work or will it go to some default super low tiiming safetey mode like what happens in some of my other cars.

And don't need lecture on doing it not worried about blowing engine at 10psi on premium.

So what will happen will this work?

Only other thing left to maybe try is the 3g lifters but not into spending more money on a car that I am going to sell. I have my new 97 so the 92 is history but its hard to sell something that runs like a dog do to the phantom knock problem.

As long as the KS is grounded, no code will be thrown, and the ecu will not go into limp home mode (default retarded timing)

I might throw in the 3g lifters, just dont expect a miracle!

If you're going to sell the car..well, the new guy will either inherit a car with an annoying problem (plugging the sensor in) OR, he'll heave the boost through the roof and run 87 octane and send the motor sky high (the KS unplugged)

If it was me, and I really wanted to sell, I would invest in a J&S safeguard, to take the stock ecu routine out of the loop. My car also suffers from crippling PK, and that would be the only way I could sell it. It sucks to spend another 500 or so, but what else can you do?

I would then explain to the buyer the new box, how it works, and why it needs to be there.

So Joe not sure I follow. If I unplug the knock sensor then its still grounded ? How can that be with no input to the computer anymore.
That safeguard thing sounds interesting but not for the price they want for them.

Its about same to buy an eprom ecu and get a custom chip. I am not overly worried ,hopefully get a knowledgable buyer and explain things to them. It is atrocious that these cars get this phantom knock. Its not octane related..Cars don't get megaknock on 7 .8 to 1 compression with 92 octane and 10psi!! Its picking up lifters or something like that..no other explanation.

im having a similar problem, i think my knock sensor must be bad or picking up alot pf phantom knock, cause i get 1-5 counts of knock at idle in neutral.
i get knock of 30-43 counts at random times when cruising at low throttle, and also get random knock when i start to spoil the turbo. by random i mean sometimes i punch it and see my normal low knock count at 20 psi, and other times it hits 35+ counts of knock before i pass 10 psi, then ill let off and push the throttle back down and get my normal low knock count again.

i dont know weather its a bad sensor or phantom knock, but im pretty sure im not really getting those knock counts inside the engine. i guess im gonna disconnect the sensor and see how it runs, i could really care less if i blow this engine up, iv got a JDM 4g63 sitting in my talon that got T-boned by some idiot in a lexus a month after i got the engine in it.

Thats is actually a pretty accurate account of what my car does. Its not knock sensor.I put in brand new one. Its definitely not octane related. I have my money on lifter or mabye shot balancer shaft bearings. Lifters is first on the list and if was keeping the car then would throw some in. Not going to throw some in ,they aren't that cheap to sell the car. Hey if dumb mits can't stop these cars from getting phantom knock not my problem. I will explain to the buyer if he has some smarts to get a custom chip or try lifters. The chip works ,it did for me. The car was so much more enjoyable and safer to drive. Its not safe trying to cross the street and having the car pull all timing and make the think a slug.!!

Once you unplug the sensor, you need to ground the metallic part of it. Then, that suckers castrated :thumb:

As I have come to determine, you're very right. No way those knock counts are true.

Selling the car would be a bi*** in that situation. I wish you luck!

You would be amazed at the lies the knock sensor tells.....Im going to leave it at that.

Try a 2G knock sensor?

I have these same issues and a I installed a 2G knock sensor and all I get a is a Knock sensor error code. I thought this was suposed to be plug and play. Is ther any more info on this swap upgrade?

you can remove the factory KS and ground it or you can run the KS wire through a 560K ohm resistor to ground to fool the ecu.

My 93 AWD talon (92 6-bolt swap) had the same things your has. I ended up getting a J&S safeguard and it cured that crap. I also had john calibrate my unit for the 2G sensor, it is much more discriminate at detecting real knock, not just noise.

the 2G sensor is incompatible with the 1G ecu.

Thanks for verifying that. It looks like I just wasted $75 by taking someones advice that didn't know what they are talking about. It just goes to show that we need to be careful about giving and taking advice.

you can sell it on the trader as the AEM EMS uses that sensor. or if you get a safeguard you can use the 2G sensor. byron
